The six clubs that currently play in the English set up (Cardiff, Swansea, Wrexham, Newport, Merthyr and Colwyn Bay have always played in the English league {as Berwick have been a part of Scottish Football since 1905}). Welsh clubs must now enter the Welsh league system.The circumstances under which the Welsh play in England is entirely separate from the current debate and circumstances. Are the new Gretana playing in England?....no!Its quite simple really,Gretna and the Welsh clubs were members of the English FA prior to the inception of UEFA, if Rangers had been a member of the FA and playing in their leagues prior to UEFA then no one would stop us playing there today. All clubs playing in a different countries league prior to UEFA were given the option of staying there. Now you said about Gretna moving, well they moved to Scotland a decade or so ago, so they are moving to their own country so why would it be stoped??? The new Gretna were not allowed to apply to the English system and now play in Scottish leagues so Gretna are of no relevance to our situation. Never say never. The way things were in yesteryears in organising football leagues is not necessarily the way things will be in near-future years.And the difference from the last 14 years? Well how about the swelling numbers of clubs who are in massive debt, probably unsustainable debt, a lasting recession in Europe where many clubs struggle with their finances, a widening gap between the super-rich clubs and the rest where big European competitions are mainly won by the same small band of clubs (risks becoming more than boring), the growing influence of fans who are fed up being ripped off and are becoming more active in voicing their concerns, falling attendances at games that do not involve super-big clubs. The world is moving on in difficult times, and the football world will move with it. The only real question is at what pace. And it would be just great if Rangers was at the forefront in helping to fashion new opportunities to play in a different league. Seems to me like Charles is abosutely right to be pressing the case to explore the options and to explore them with energy, drive and determination.
