Bluepeter9 5,167
4 hours ago, ForeverAndEver said: Riddy, wish they would just fuck off again. So, Danny Wilson is likely for the off again. And again, perhaps at the period he's performing his best in a Rangers' shirt during a particular spell. This time, he's allegedly setting off for America and the MLS: football's retirement village. And at age 26, no less. What should be the peak years of a footballer's life. We needn't spend much time recapping Wilson's career missteps. He left too soon for Liverpool the first time, just as he had a chance to be an integral part of a trophy-winning side. But the glory and prestige of an EPL contract came to his door, and Wilson rebuffed Rangers for a shot at glory.™ The deal could've been decent enough for Rangers had Wilson shown any of the talent he'd displayed as a 17-year-old replacement for an injured Majid Bougherra. The team that made him its youngest-ever Champions League participant stood to make £5 million off the deal—£2 million reported up front and £300,000 for each of his first 10 appearances—if Wilson could ever stay on the park. He didn't. And then he didn't get on the pitch during a pair of loan deals to Blackpool and then Bristol City, who, at the time, were mired in an English Championship relegation battle. Wilson pulled on the glorious No. 40 shirt for the Robins only once. Cue a 2013 return to Scotland via a loan to Hearts, where he would eventually land on a permanent deal and be named captain at just 21-years-old. Wilson would make 85 total appearances for the Edinburgh side as he began to show glimpses of the skill he'd apparently left behind at Murray Park when he moved south. And then the return to Ibrox, which has been, we could say, an up and down show in an up and down team for the still-young central defender. Yet now, just as he appears to have a role in Graeme Murty's resurgent side, Wilson again wants out, this time for the glamour transfer to Denver and a Colorado Rapids side that finished second-bottom in MLS last season. A league with viewership numbers that would make Neil Doncaster cringe and a market cap solely tied to franchises' expansion fees. Talent has never been the question with Danny Wilson. Or, at least, it didn't use to be. Years of toiling on the bench in what should have been his prime development stage certainly stunted his growth as a footballer. And what would have become of him in the fallout of 2012 can never be known. But what is clear, certainly now, is that this has never been a player suited for the spotlight that comes when one pulls on the light blue. Wilson once said he hoped to model his career on the AC Milan great Paolo Maldini, who similarly broke into the senior side at age 17. Maldini's run had a slightly different trajectory, of course: more than 900 appearances, 7 Serie A titles, 5 Champions Leagues, 25 years in a Milan shirt. Wilson, as he prepares to exit Ibrox a second time, surely must look back now and wonder what could have been. If he looks back for guidance and self-reflection at all. And that, perhaps, will be the memory of Wilson's career, whenever and wherever it stops. Maybe this move to America is for the sake of his personal life, and maybe there is something noble in that pursuit. But this was a young man who could have and perhaps should have reached the heights of the sport. Instead, he was forever in pursuit of something that seems impossible for the average supporter to understand. A "success" that seems so intangible. Whatever that is, it will always feel like a missed opportunity, for both him and Rangers. —Shane Nicholson, @ofvoid An embarrassing read! MasterD 7,457
He's an average player that'll be quickly forgotten about. Actually quite pleasing that we are happy to get rid IMO, a new contract would be an easy option to take. We just need to follow it up with a better replacement now or in the summer. TMB 14,167
I'm not sure what the issue with Danny Wilson is. He broke through at Rangers, helped us win the league, and our club decided to sell him to Liverpool and make a profit. At that time, it was seen as good business. He failed to break through at Liverpool but they're an EPL team with money to burn and Danny Wilson was only ever seen as a prospect to them. When he came back to Scotland he did well at Hearts captaining them to promotion out of the Scottish Championship. Rather than stay with Hearts (there was also talk of celtic being interested at that time) he re-joined Rangers and helped us gain promotion. Danny's contract is due to run out in the summer and it doesn't seem like we've offered him a new one so he's free to move wherever he wants. He chose to go to the MLS which will pay him more money, a fresh challenge in a great country, and the quality of football is probably better than that of the SPFL. I say good luck to him. Maybe he has been told he's not first choice, but why the assasination as he leaves? Horrible article to write. Best of luck to the lad. This would seem (to me) to be the nub of it - there seem to have been times when he’s been fit, but not first pick. I know there’s no divine right, but he seems to be becoming no more than an able stop gap & probably down the pecking order if Alves continues to deign us with his presence. DariuszAdamczuk 548
Wilson has been solid for us over 2 spells, any player with any kind of ambition would've took that Liverpool move. Anyone who's been to America will tell you it's about 100000 times better than this shithole country (and that's just the food) and he'll likely get paid better than he does with us. If he is leaving I'll say all the best Danny and thanks for your service, not our best ever player but by no means is he one of our worst. Bad Robot 21,513
People criticising the author ought to have a word with themselves as there’s enough haters out there without unnecessary putting the boot into one of our own. So what if he’s not been to Ibrox, he supports us and buys merchandise, RTV etc. so he’s still a fan, the same as the ST holder, the shareholder, the old guy in the pub who sits with his half pint watching us without actually putting money direct to the club. Heshootshescores 1,905
He does follow the dollar.. but most do, although Wilson apparently does it with no consideration for what it might do to his career long term. Rangers cant complain too much though, he fucked Hearts over more than us, and we are the only club who have managed to collect a fee for him. Not a bad player but I always felt he was stuck somewhere between an old fashioned bruiser and a slick modern centre half. Not aggressive enough to be the former nor fast enough to be the latter. I wish him well and look forward to seeing McCrorie develop into that position.

Both were petty and bitter and refelcted very badly on the small men who wrote them. You make valid points but imo wether the the statements were snyde ,petty and bitter or not i have agreed with both assessments. McInnes should have taken the Rangers job and Wilson should have spent the next few months showing he's finally matured into a decent CH. I'll not lose any sleep over the bullit we dodged with McInnes but Wilson is dissapointing , more so for his career being unfulfilled than for Rangers.
