Mate, bit off topic but while you're here...

What happens if RM gets a request from authorities to supply IPs of people? Think I remember gogzy talking about it years ago but can't remember what he said about it.

Suppose what I'm really wondering is if some of the other mob are on here on Sunday looking for things to report under the new laws, what happens?

Surely Data Protection would be a factor in that scenario?

FF have a pinned thread saying that the police can ask for IP addresses

Not that technically savvy but would a VPN make it impossible for the site to provide an IP address?

An IP address on its own doesn’t mean very much. Especially given IPs can and do change on the fly when using mobile carriers.

All they can do with an IP is identify a very rough location and which ISP it’s assigned to. Without a court order the latter isn’t disclosing anything about devices using that IP at that given time as it could be thousands. To get that far the police already need to have solid evidence to suggest a specific individual is involved in hate crimes. Even then this doesn’t prove who posted the comment…. Just who pays the bill.

The email address, name and phone number on the forum account is usually a better identifier. A lot of people allow their Facebook accounts to be found using this info… which is usually where the police will also find something else they can get them on.

Makes it considerably harder for the police but not impossible to locate individuals. Like when dealing with ISP’s it’s going to require court orders etc… VPN providers still track who is using their services and the police are still able to request more information from them. Where people fall down with VPN’s in terms of identification is the payment details and personal information supplied.

VPN’s make it safer to browse the internet… but they don’t give people a golden ticket to partake in illegal activities.

The police barely have the resources to deal with actual crimes. Anyone reporting an online hate crime without significant evidence that identifies an individual will be given an incident number and told to fuck off.

Thanks for clearing this up, given the sheer volume of complaints that seem to be being made I am sure that your last sentence there will prove to be the case. Obviously the number of complaints will die down a bit after the novelty factor and publicity fades, however there will be events, like Sundays game, Indy marches, Loyal order, Republican parades, celebrity and political outbursts and ill advised statements that will see huge numbers of complaints being made that could see it take weeks for complaints just to be logged, never mind investigated or acted upon. An utter shambles, that absolutely everyone except Useless and his troupe of clapping seals at Holyrood saw coming.

  • 3 weeks later...

3 BF5 tickets renewed, split up across BR1/2 but somewhat close, annoying but could have been worse

2 CF2 renewed same seats even though the initial announcement said they are in an affected area

Fully expect some sort of communication from the club during pre season saying they are being moved 😅

I’ll raise it at the next club meeting 😂

How weird would that be if they did get moved and my 2 transferred to they seats 🤣
