Bates and Kiernan don't come close. But it's the right decision to free up his wage or I could see us being stuck with the same 4 next season. Even if he's replaced by someone of Alves' quality we'll still need another in, we can't be relying on Bates. We need a first choice signing and Sumaila is far from proven enough to be that, so we're looking at : X First Choice CB (possibly Alves or Izquierdos) , Sumaila, Wilson, Bates. I'd feel far more comfortable with Hill still in the squad over Bates tbh. I guess it comes down to how much wages we need freed up, but we could do much worse than having Clint in the squad even if he's considered 3rd or 4th choice on paper. He still has at least a year to run of his contract so unless we pay him off ,which I hope we don't do for any of the players, we can't just release him unfortunately. But it is the correct decision. We need a new defence in and can't waste a wage on Clint Hill if we are serious about league and European ambitions.
