Ryan_1 1,136
In 1998 we had the surprise of Croatia reaching the Semis and eventually finishing third, after a win against Holland in the third/fourth play-off. 2002 there was the shock of Senegal beating holders France on the opening day and beating them to 2nd place in the group. We also had the run of South Korea, who famously beat Italy in extra time in the quater-finals, on their route to a fourth place finish. Finally in 2006 didn't come up that many shocks during the latter stages in the tournament, their was a few surprises during the group stages. Ghana surprised alot of people coming out of their group infront of Czech Republic (many peoples dark horses at that time) and the USA. Ivory Coast played some great stuff. They were put in the 'Group of death' along with Argentina, Holland and Serbia and Montenegro. Against Argentina and Holland they ran them both very close, losing out 2-1 on both occassions. Last, but not least were Switzerland. They surprised a few by topping a group with eventual finalists France and South Korea. So who do you think will be 2010 surprise package? Ryan_1 1,136
South Africa? Not the greatest side, but with home support it would go in their advantage. Showed in the Confedrations Cup.

NOLUWDC 1
Ivory Coast for me. I'm sure if they didn't have Argentina and Holland in their group in 2006 then they would've had a chance of winning it.
bluenose_72 198
I'd imagine a couple of the African sides(Ivory Coast and Cameroon) will progress quite far(quarters, maybe even semi's).

simplythebest 11,453
Portugal will shock a lot of people. Portugal are a team we expect to do well, maybe not expect them to win it but i'd always say Portugal should at least get to the quarter finals.
