Norwich City have appointed Ewan Chester from Rangers as the club's new chief scout.

Chester's association with the Scottish Premier League champions goes back more than 20 years, having arrived at Ibrox in a dual coach/scout role back in 1987 after a brief spell with Oldham Athletic.

In 2004 he left Glasgow to join fellow SPL side Livingston, but was only there for six months before joining Fulham to help reconstruct their scouting department.

However, in May 2007, Chester returned to Glasgow with Walter Smith where he has been responsible for their extensive network of scouts around Europe.

Norwich City boss Paul Lambert told the club's official website: "Ewan is a top, top scout and he will be a first-class addition to our team here at Norwich City. He's got excellent experience and connections throughout Britain and Europe, which will be a really major plus for us as we continue to identify the players we want to be part of things here."

Chief Executive David McNally commented: "This is a really important appointment for Norwich City Football Club.

"The role of the chief scout at any top-class football club is becoming ever more vital and in Ewan we have been able to recruit one of the very best in European football.

"We are delighted that he has agreed to join the club at this important time and his appointment further underlines the club's ambitious plans for the near future."

Disappointing do we have any scouts now wacko.gif

From memory he got pelters on here always , so what is the fuss about ??

Really starting to think were being taken for a ride again by the club.

One day were talking about a transfer funds, the next day the head scout moves on.

WS also talking about having an even smaller team.

Starting to smell shite tbh.

boaberto beat me too it , its not unheard of of ex players returning to clubs in a staff role capacity , Ulf Kirsten is a scout or coach at Leverkusen ,leonardo was technical director before getting the managers job , durrant and coisty etc .

Yeah I know it's not unheard of ex-players taking up staff roles, I just never seen him taking up a scouting role. Just like I don't see Allan McGregor sticking round football after he's hung up his boots.

Ach of course he will , he will be in the corridors of ibrox tasked with interviewing the young lassies for the receptionists job :pipe:

I get the feeling we will be sticking to home based players (scottish home grown) or ones in the uk at least... Not that we hadn't been doing that anyway, I just can't see us going beyond that now unless we have a trick up our sleeves

An optimist may suggest that this is McCoist beginning to get the club round to his way of running things

I reckon Ally will have more power/say than he will be given credit for this season

Chester has been slated for years as has our scouting system

Could it be that while Smith was too old school in his view of scouting, Ally has different ideas?

Lets fucking hope so

Chester exits Ibrox a champion, says Walter Smith

Graeme Macpherson

28 May 2010

EWAN CHESTER, Rangers’ chief scout, has revealed he took counsel from Walter Smith before agreeing to move to Norwich City.

Chester’s association with the Ibrox club goes back more than 20 years, having arrived initially in a dual coach/scout role back in 1987 after a brief spell with Oldham Athletic.

In Smith’s first stint at Rangers in the 1990s, Chester became chief scout and had a hand in the arrival of players such as Lorenzo Amoruso, Tugay, Sergio Porrini and Claudio Reyna.

He left in 2004 to join Livingston but was there for just six months before he was headhunted by Fulham to help reconstruct their scouting department.

In May 2007, though, Smith brought Chester back to Ibrox where he has been responsible for their extensive network of scouts around Europe. “I’ve lived the dream for 20 years,” he told the Herald.

“With Rangers I’ve won 15 titles and 35 trophies. Walter was my mentor and it has been an honour to work for the greatest manager in Rangers’ history.

“I spoke with Walter when this opportunity came up and he felt it was a good time for me to move on, to leave as a champion. So, reluctantly, I’m leaving Rangers.”

Chester expressed his excitement at the prospect of working with manager Paul Lambert who has led Norwich back into the Coca-Cola Championship. “It’s a new challenge and one I’m looking forward to. I’m close with Paul, we became good friends through Stefan Klos.”

The feeling was mutual, Lambert adding: “Ewan is a top, top scout and he will be a first-class addition to our team here at Norwich City. He’s got excellent experience and connections throughout Britain and Europe, which will be a really major plus for us as we continue to identify the players we want to be part of things here.”

David McNally, Norwich’s chief executive who worked with Chester at Fulham, added: “The role of the chief scout at any top-class football club is becoming ever more vital and in Ewan we have been able to recruit one of the very best in European football.”
