Arsene Wenger blames Man Utd pitch for Arsenal mistakes

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger cited the Old Trafford pitch as one of the reasons why his side underperformed in their 1-0 defeat by Manchester United.

"The intensity was high but it was a very bad pitch," said the Frenchman.

"The technical quality suffered as a result and that's why you saw mistakes from both sides."

Ji-Sung Park scored the only goal of the game which ensured United leapfrog the Gunners at the top of the Premier League table.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson's side now have a two-point cushion over Arsenal and Manchester City as well as a game in hand.

Their next league fixture is at Chelsea where they will have the opportunity to put a six-point gap between themselves and the Blues.

"Sunday is a massive game," said Ferguson. "That will go a long way to establishing what happens at the top of the league.

"We are 16 games undefeated. Now we have to make it 17."

Wenger, meanwhile, was unhappy with the playing surface in Manchester but the praised the opposition backline for frustrating Arsenal's attack.

"If I ask you do you want a good pitch or a bad one, what do you say?" he added.

"They made technical mistakes as well because the pitch is not good enough to play good football. It is bouncy and slippery.

"Overall, you have to give credit to United's defensive quality.

"We tried everything to create chances. I thought we were unlucky to lose the game, but we have to take encouragement from tonight's performance."

Wenger, whose team have not beaten title challengers United or Chelsea in 11 encounters said he was not worried by his side's form against their rivals.

"Calm down," he insisted.

"You have to be realistic and objective and not necessarily reach big conclusions. I am here to analyse one game.

"It is a big frustration and disappointment but I don't know how big a blow it is to our title chances," he stated.

"What is important is that we bounce back in our next game [at home to Stoke on Saturday].

"Overall, on what I have seen there is no reason not to believe.

"We know we can play better offensively and actually, we looked quite solid."

Ji-Sung Park scored what proved to be the winner in the first half, with a header from Nani's deflected cross.

United could have enjoyed a more comfortable victory had Wayne Rooney not fired his penalty high and wide of the Arsenal goal, after the Gunners full-back Gael Clichy was deemed to have illegally handled.

Park's record against Arsenal is very good - he is in fantastic form

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson

Ferguson was left bemused by his striker's effort.

"It was an unusual penalty, normally Wayne always keeps them down, I've never known him to hit one over," he added.

Ferguson also paid tribute to Park, who scored for the fourth time against the Gunners.

"Park's record against Arsenal is very good, he is in fantastic form.

"Unfortunately we're going to lose him to the Asia Cup for seven matches, which is disappointing."

No it wasnt Wenger it was down to you playing Arshavin again after his 4th shite game in a row while leaving a brimming with confidence Walcott on the bench. The midfield was fucking awful especially Song who looked laboured the whole game .

that was one of the worst performances of the season and he comes out with more shite

Arsene Wenger complaining, now there is a suprise

It's always somebody or someone elses fault, never his or the Arsenal players. Wenger got his tactics wrong, Sir Alex got it spor on, Manchester United frustrated them, Arsenal never turned up.

Maybe he should take a look at his team, after all, he signed everyone of them. The defence is rotten, they struggled to pass a ball, there was no urgency, creativity and nothing up top. Once again Wenger and his men bottled it in a big game.

I hate Arsene Wenger, the guy is a complete and utter plug.

He should be the next celtc manager with all that winging and whining!

I bet he moans when the sun rises in the morning and gives off to his wife/mistress when it gets dark at night. He is a complete and utter dildo!

I’m just utterly fed up with Arsene Wenger to be honest. Sure he gets the team playing good football and it does score goals but the complete lack of regard for tactics and just allowing the opposition in big games to do what they want is shocking.

The record vs Man Utd and Chelsea is shocking and this run is just not acceptable. Nasri is one of the most in form players in the league and Europe. Alex Ferguson makes sure he is doubled up on. So Nasri doesn't have a good game. Nani is also one of the better wingers in the league, what does Wenger do? Just allow Clichy (who is rubbish btw) to get raped again and no help for Clichy at all.

Not pressing the opposition enough. Thinking you can go into big games and not set up tactics to stop the opposition like Utd and Chelsea playing is unforgivable.

You add in all that and all he can do after the game is moan about the pitch.

If Arsenal don't win a trophy this season, I could see there being a divide in the Arsenal fanbase.

I think what he's done at Arsenal has been magnificent, but he annoys me humongously. Nothing is ever his fault.

There already is a massive divide from what I hear.

I've stopped going down to see them occasionally like I used to, I'd much rather get Spurs tickets. That's where the REAL entertaining football is at these days.
