☸ The 2014 Brazil World Cup Thread ☸

Van Gal making the substitution of the keeprs was , in a word..genius! The Dutch have played fantastic football this world cup. Why are the Dutch still there and playing so well ..because they have a great team spirit, unlike England etc.You saw a perfect example during the shootout when the camera went to the players celebrating Krull's first penaly save, and Cillessen was punching the air and going crazy. He knew that the manager made the right decision, and he didn't take a hissy fit over it. This was about Holland getting through , and they are all there playing for each other, and that's why they are going to win the world cup!

The fact that Cillessen has never ever saved a penalty in his whole professional career probably helped make the substitution a little easier.

The fact that Cillessen has never ever saved a penalty in his whole professional career probably helped make the substitution a little easier.

The main reason that Cillessen was subbed is that he did not listen to instructions from the bench against Australia when facing a penalty from Jedinak. He was told which way to dive and he chose the opposite direction and conceded the goal. Apparently the coaches were not happy with him at all.

The career penalty save percentages per keeper are as follows:

Cillessen: 0% Krul: 10% Vorm: 27%

Going by that, you would expect Michel Vorm to have gotten the nod... but... he is the shortest of the three. Not much in it between Krul and Cillessen.

Cillessen: 6'2" Krul: 6'4" Vorm: 6'0"

The conclusion must be that the Dutch technical staff have been studying penalty-takers and did indeed study Costa Rica's penalties against Greece and decided to send on the left-handed keeper.

I don't think the penalty %s matter that much at that stage. It's all mind games.

Yes we know Krul's record isnt too impressive because the commentator has quickly looked it up. But the Costa Ricans don't know it and to them, drained and exhausted, as well as nervous, they see a giant keeper being subbed on for penalties and assume he must be a specialist. That must crank up the pressure enormously. Marginal gains and all that.

I am hoping for a Germany v Holland final, but, to be honest, there are going to be 2 great teams in the final whatever happens in the semis. Hoping Holland win it, as it would be nice to have a team that's never won it before triumph. Plus, I love watching the Dutch play when they are on song, as they are brilliant to watch.

Ray Parlour is an absolutely clueless, cliché-ridden, stuttering, stumbling, shambolic mess of a man. He must be the worst pundit ever.

He also just said to the other Talksport pundits that he wanted Brazil to lift the cup "for our personal safety." He was serious.
