The Gardener wants back into football

Recommended Posts

FORMER Rangers striker Jon Daly last night insisted Ally McCoist should not be judged on his record at Rangers because he was badly let down by the players.

The Irishman was signed for Rangers by McCoist and the current Hearts under-20 coach sees no reason why the 53-year-old would not be successful elsewhere.

Many supporters heavily criticised the management team at Ibrox for the bad results and performances in their first Championship season, but one of the players who was there believes most of the blame lies elsewhere.

Daly said: "I really enjoyed working with Ally and my time at Rangers.

"It is easy to point fingers at a manager when things are not going well, but as players we needed to take more responsibility when it came to the actual matches. A lot of them should have done that.

"When things go well then we all take that pat on the back but when it goes badly everyone looks at the manager.

"I had a lot of time for the manager and still do. I was very sad to see him go.

"Obviously things didn’t pan out for him the way he hoped. I would like to se him get back in.

"There is his media work keeping him busy, but if the opportunity came about to get back into management then I am sure he’ll do a good job.”

Daly quit playing at 32, a series of knee problems curtailing his career, but there is another veteran striker at Ibrox looking as good as ever.

Kenny Miller at 36 was his team's best player in the Scottish Cup Final and scored the 243rd goal against Hibernian.

And Daly said: "I'm not at all surprised he’s doing well. Kenny is a great professional and that shows if you look after yourself, you can play. Kenny does that.

"He’s probably had to adapt his game as he’s got older, but has done well. He was great this season and I am sure he will hope that continues.”

Daly is part of Robbie Nielson's backroom team at Hearts and believes Rangers being back in the Premiership will mean every other will have to raise their game.

He said; "Having a good club like Rangers coming back is great.

"It’s going to be that everyone at Hearts has to maintain the levels that they have done but I am sure Robbie Nielson will be confident of doing that.

"He can hopefully recruit over the summer and get the right sort of player in that he’s looking for.

"It’s going to be difficult because Rangers will make the league that bit tougher for everyone else.”

Steven Taylor, the former Newcastle United defender, is eyeing up joining another Championship club but a move to Rangers is not an impossibility.

It is understood that he would prefer to stay in England; however, a switch to Scotland, he has also been linked with Celtic, is something he could consider.

Wages would be an issue and he was on a basic of £22,000 a week at St James's Park.

Taylor admitted he was unsure what he would do next and said: "Who knows? I’m excited for my future. It’s something to look forward to.

“We’ll play it by ear and take it one day at a time. We’ll not jump the gun.”

Why would he not be judged as a manager on the back of his time time with rangers? It is after all the only managerial job he has ever had and the only thing anybody has to go on. What other managerial credentials could be applied to any job application?

It's like going for a job at McDonald's but telling them not to take into account  your years at burger king cause you made a cunt of it.

Purely on his football managent:

He signed the majority of these players.

Little evidence of tactical training.

Part time teams looked fitter.

Set plays awful and appeared unpracticed

Inability to get best out of players, some of whom excelled at previous clubs.

Ajax style of play claim -reality a million miles away from it.

Games of smack ball off managers bare arse.

And so much more.

Yes players were also culpable but insufficient was done to change it resulting in us losing to minnows on a frequency that it stopped being a shock.

The buck lies with him.

Ally, as a Rangers player, is a legend.

Ally, as a manger, failed miserably at his first attempt at management.

I wish him all the best in the future and so should everyone else.  Look for positives, not negatives all the time and the world will be a happier place :)

It's not his failings as a manager that's the issue - it's his actions whilst manager that has eroded his 'Super Ally' status.

One of the greatest Rangers players I have seen and the worst manager of Rangers I have seen. Given his record with us as a manager I just can't see him getting  another job in management. I remember him saying when he was our manager that the training had not changed much in 30yrs from when he started playing with us. That pretty much sums up his management

I doubt he will get a decent job in management unless he really pulls his act together; actions and management style.  I don't condone his actions whilst manager but am prepared to move on.

Super Ally will always be that to me though.  Legend as a player.

Ally was a Legend as a player and helped make sure we didnt have titles stripped.

As a Manager he was a disappointment during exceptionally trying times.

He is still held in high esteem by most Rangers fans. Certainly the ones I go to games with who tbf are all 50 plus.

I will wholeheartedly welcome him back to Ibrox as a fan.
