Our squad as things stand (4th July)

With many players having already left, eight new arrivals so far, and the possible promotion of some of the youngsters in to the first team squad, what does our bank of players look like at the moment?

There's a while left in the transfer market to bring in another few key players, but also the opportunity that some more may leave, either permanently or out on loan.

Who would you like to see moved on, or brought in?

Goalkeepers:

Wes Foderingham     Matt Gilks     Liam Kelly

Defenders:

Rob Kiernan     Lee Wallace     Danny Wilson     James Tavernier     Matt Crooks     Clint Hill     Lee Hodson     Ryan Sinnamon     Fraser Aird

Midfielders:

Andy Halliday     Jason Holt     Joey Barton     Harry Forrester     Jordan Rossiter     Niko Kranjcar     Liam Burt     Tom Walsh     Andy Murdoch   Jordan Thompson

Forwards:

Martyn Waghorn     Ryan Hardie     Kenny Miller     Barrie McKay     Michael O'Halloran     Josh Windass     Mekhi McLeod

Mekhi got let go at the end of the season.

Crooks is a midfielder

Windass is a midfielder

Murdoch and Aird have no future with the club.

Never realised that McLeod was away. Windass is listed as a forward on Rangers website.

Crooks listed as a defender on Rangers' website, and Windass as a forward. Might mean nothing, but perhaps those are the positions they've been signed for.

I'd like to see Mekhi released

Crooks moved to midfield

Windass moved to midfield

And the OP doing some homework

Wont happen but I would like to see O'Halloran out. I am not a fan of his at all just my personal opinion but I really don't rate him amongst those other players.

Isn't he our most expensive signing under Warburton?

Surely he must see something in the lad

He does but I certainlty don't. We have sunk a long way if standing out for St Johnstone makes you good enough for Rangers.

*cough* *cough* Ally McCoist?

Everyone knew McCoist could play though there is a difference and there are always a few exceptions. He was good at St Johnstone but that in no way makes him good enough for us. I hope he proves me wrong but I expect he will be sold in jan or next summer as I don't think he is up to playing for Rangers and I also don't think the way you see him he wants to be here as much as rest of the squad.

In a nutshell, we need a first team CB and a CF/Target-Man brought in this summer. Those that are likely to be released or moved on over the next 2 windows are self-evident.

CB; Mariappa or Nelson would do.

CF/Target-Man; ???

I've not seen us linked with a CF/Target-Man, the odd pacey striker like Bradshaw yes but not someone to power home one of our crosses with a header (or even win a header) against the inevitable packed defence or 3-man marking. I don't really have any suggestions either, we're looking for a free with a good goalscoring ratio and who scores a good percentage of his goals from headers = might as well be looking for the arc of the covenant. There are a few frees out there with that kind of stature but even imagining signing them is a stretch i.e. Hugo Almeida. One with a good record but who went off the boil last year is Kevin Kurányi (Warburton wouldn't dismiss someone purely because they did fuck all last season) and he too is on a free.  A loan "solution" to this area could be someone like Chelsea's Tammy Abraham, whether you can see that happening or not is another matter.

Just for the record I'm not opposed to a slight & pacey striker, we need someone but the way I see it Waghorn is the allrounder, Miller reads the game and can find a yard of space with his speed (especially on as a sub or in big games), O'Halloran is the speed demon; who's the specialist for headers/wrestling a ball/lay-offs? There will be times when slight forwards/pace isn't the answer up front and Waghorn is an allrounder he's not someone you think "We need a tower to head one home today, Waghorn's the man!". Ideally, I'd bring in someone as a target-man and a goalscorer but I'm not greedy and I'll take the CF/Target-Man as preferred on account that it gives us more distinct options to what we have already.

I doubt we'll sign a target man or a powerhouse striker, pumping crosses into the box isn't our play style. We need a striker that can drop back into midfield when needed.
