RANGERS wonderboy John Fleck has a KILLER uncle who stabbed a man to death, the News of the World can reveal.

Evil Edward Lyon — the brother of John’s mum Christine — was caged for life after knifing his victim in the neck and leaving him to die in the street.

The murderer was freed four months ago — but is already BACK in jail after breaching his parole last month.

And the cocky con loves bragging to fellow lags about his star nephew in a bid to get on the right side of Gers fans behind bars.

An ex-con who served alongside Lyon in Greenock Prison told us: “Eddie was always going on about his Rangers connections.

“Obviously it endeared him to the blue half of the nick. And that offers you a level of protection.”

Lyon turned killer when he was just 17 — the same age his talented nephew John is now.

But their lives could hardly be further apart. One turned to crime and ended up in jail while the other is a rising talent tipped for the top — and a megabucks salary.

Last night a source close to the young star told us his family are proud of how he’s fought to leave his relative’s dark past behind him.

Our source said: “The situation with his uncle Edward is one John tries not to think about. He was just a toddler when he was jailed.”

And our source revealed how John looked up to his OTHER uncle, Robert Fleck — his dad Alan’s brother and a Rangers star in the 1980s.

He told us: “He has always admired his uncle Robert and tried to follow that example. He just wants to get on with his football.”

Killer Lyon, now 32, was given a life term at the High Court in Glasgow for murdering William Barclay in April 1994.

Lyon and pal Garry Brotherston, 33, both of Knightswood, Glasgow, attacked the draughtsman in the city’s West End.

The thugs stabbed Barclay, 40, of Erskine, Renfrewshire, in the neck, leaving him to collapse and die in a pool of blood.

In October 2002, Lyon’s lawyers launched an appeal bid after Brotherston — who became a Christian in jail — made a statement claiming he alone was responsible for the killing.

That appeal was denied and Lyon served the rest of his sentence.

He was released last October but sources claim he then started a bitter feud with his dad Alexander, 63 — Gers ace John’s grandad.

Our source said: “Lyon’s mum Jean died six years ago while he was in jail and he BLAMED his dad in some way for her death. He believed he didn’t treat her right.”

Frail Alexander was attacked at his home in Yoker, Glasgow, on January 4 and treated in hospital for minor injuries. A 41-year-old woman was also attacked during the incident.

A week later, Lyon was sent back to jail for a breach of the peace. He is now in Glenochil Prison, Clacks.

Last May, aged just 16, Fleck came on as a sub in Rangers’ Scottish Cup Final win over Queen of the South.

He made his first SPL start last month and is expected to play today against Celtic.

His uncle Robert, now 43, was a striker for the Ibrox side from 1983 to 1987. He won four caps for Scotland.

Last night a spokesman for Fleck said: “We have no comment to make.”
