I normally think your arguments are fairly good, but I am just not having the highlighted part above. 
I am sure other things would also have played it's part, but I have no doubt IF he had gone into the dressing room at h/t then some papers and other media would have been screaming on Monday, GVB breaks work permit rules to try and rescue the semi-final, what punishment will he be getting? 

not necessarily - anyone can talk about their aims, aspirations etc when offered a job.  Just talking about something and doing it are totally different.  You see lots of players talking about signing a pre-contract etc.  and can't wait to get started, no different. They all have a start date.
