Blackburn Rovers boss Sam Allardyce is making a desperate last-gasp bid to hijack James Beattie’s move to Rangers.

Allardyce wants to bring Rovers old boy Beattie back to the club and will match the SPL side’s cash offer for him, which is around £1 million.

Beattie was in Glasgow yesterday to discuss terms but may now head for Blackburn today to see if they can come up with a better offer - and could even sign in time to face another old club Everton tomorrow.

The chunky forward is out of favour at Stoke and the signing of Kenwyne Jones means he can go. Rangers hoped to land him in a coup but the chance to go ‘home’ may give Blackburn the edge.

As I live in Southampton, I used to watch Beattie regularly. His partnership with Kevin Phillips was very good and they scored freely. There was a period towards the end of his time there that he seemed disinterested, lazy and lethargic, but the occasional burst of skill and energy (think Daniel Cousin). I think he could do well for us, but I am puzzled with the push for strikers. I would have thought that our need was in midfield?

Stoke City last night kicked out a last-gasp Blackburn bid to hijack James Beattie’s move to Rangers.

A former Ewood Park striker, the 32-year-old is set to seal a £1.5million switch to Ibrox today — becoming the club’s first new signing in two years. Rangers will get their man despite Sam Allardyce making a late attempt to take the unhappy Stoke star back to his first professional club.

Unwilling to sell Beattie to another Premiership club, Stoke boss Tony Pullis kicked the late intervention into touch. It leaves the way clear for Walter Smith to complete his second deal of the day.

Earlier, Scotland star Lee McCulloch handed Smith and the club a boost when he ended doubts over his future by committing to a new two-year contract.

Beattie talks continued last night after he underwent a Murray Park medical and held talks over personal terms, with agent Mike Morris telling Sportsmail: ‘Negotiations are ongoing and will continue.’

Beattie is expected to be the first of a raft of new arrivals at Ibrox, with Portsmouth still considering an offer for utility man Tommy Smith tendered last Monday.

Denying that a twin capture might end his interest in Rapid Vienna’s Croatia international Nikica Jelavic, manager Smith also refused to rule out further transfer activity at the cash-strapped club.

‘We are in negotiations with both Stoke and Portsmouth with regard to the signing of James and Tommy.

‘Just where we are at present is always difficult to say, but, hopefully, we can manage to conclude both deals.

‘We’re still looking and will continue to look until the end of the transfer window to try to bring another one or two.’

While the outlook on Jelavic looks increasingly uncertain, the player himself believes a deal can still be done after scoring for Croatia in a midweek draw with Slovakia.

‘I am still a Rapid player,’ said Jelavic, ‘but Rangers do not give up. All could be known in several days.’

As well as chasing those three strikers, Smith is also running his eye over the 20-year-old Arsenal winger Nacer Barazite and Honduras forward Georgie Welcome.

Reacting to rumours that Welcome had returned home, the Rangers boss said: ‘He is still here. It’s unfortunate we have not been able to get a game for him.

‘We had a game in Northern Ireland, but we have not been able to play him in any public game.

‘We’ll have a closed-doors game next week and that will give him an opportunity to show what he can do.

‘It’s always difficult for anyone to show in a training session how he is going to go.’

Smith hopes to have Beattie in his team to face Kilmarnock tomorrow, but remains relaxed over the prospect of relying on players who have captured two consecutive titles.

‘If you look at our squad, we probably have 14 relatively experienced players,’ he said.

‘We don’t have a big squad and we have to enlarge that. But I don’t think there is any doubt that the fact we haven’t signed a player for a couple of years has brought a good bond to the players we have.

‘So it has been a benefit to us in terms of overall team spirit.’

One of those experienced stars, 32-year-old McCulloch, is now likely to end his career at Ibrox after agreeing to a two-year contract extension.

Signed by Smith from Wigan in July 2007, the ex-Motherwell striker established himself as a key player in a holding midfield role last season, making 44 starts.

McCulloch told the Rangers website: ‘I know the club is trying to secure players who are going to be out of contract next year and there are efforts being made to bring in new faces, too.

‘I want to be a part of things and now I’m really looking forward to the season ahead. It was a no brainer to sign.

‘(Chief executive) Martin Bain and the gaffer asked me what I wanted to do and I told them I wanted to stay. It was nothing to do with money — I just wanted to be here trying to win trophies.

‘Everything was done and dusted in a matter of minutes. I didn’t have to think about it. I was delighted to stay.’

McCulloch missed this week’s Scotland defeat to Sweden in Stockholm after being hospitalised with a viral chest infection, but is now back at home and looking to make Smith’s starting line-up after he serves a two-match suspension.

Ill try and find the link put a paper reported Pullis KO'd Blackburns bid as he doesn't want Beattie in the EPL.

I was on a Stoke City forum yesterday and their fans don't want him to sign for another EPL team either. They reckon he would come back to bite them on the arse, so they clearly do rate him. They had various things to say about him, some good and some bad. Many pointed out that when he has joined a new club he has really starred for the first half of the season then seemed to lose interest. At Rangers I don't think this would be the case because he would be challenging for something for the whole season rather than playing at a team with only the threat of relegation hanging over them. They did point out that he has a rather colourful social life though.
