JAMES Hayes was the centre of attention at Kirknowe Care home in Wishaw – for 100 good reasons.

The centenarian was celebrating his birthday with family and friends who joined him for the special occasion.

And devoted Rangers fan Jimmy received two special letters – one from Her Majesty The Queen and another from Ibrox legend Ally McCoist.

The Rangers assistant manager also arranged for Jimmy to receive a signed strip, which is now hanging on his bedroom wall, along with some other goodies from the club.

Margaret Cunningham, manager at the Bupa home, said: "We presented Jimmy with a signed Rangers strip which will hang proudly on his bedroom wall.

"Jimmy also received a signed letter from Ally McCoist wishing him a happy birthday and the club sent a goodie bag with signed goodies, which brought a huge smile to his face."

Mr Hayes was born in 1911 and had four brothers and three sisters. He married Mary in 1932 and they lived very happily together in Craigneuk, Wishaw, for over 60 years before Mary passed away in 1995.

The couple had three children, James, John and Martha. And Jimmy must have his hands full writing birthday and Christmas cards as the proud centenarian has nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, six-great-great-grandchildren, two great-great-great-grandchildren and one great-great-great-great-grandchild.

Jimmy spent his working life as a grinder in Pickerings and Cummings. He was well-known in the west of Scotland as a singer in social clubs, and loves nothing better than watching sport on the TV and reading cowboy books.

Staff helped throw the special 100th birthday party for James as some relatives came from England to wish him well.

Margaret added: "We were delighted to share this special occasion with Jimmy. He has been really looking forward to reaching this landmark."

Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Lanarkshire Terry Currie, the Queen's representative in the county, was there to present James with a message from Her Majesty, along with North Lanarkshire's Depute Provost Jim Robertson.
