Sing the original;

A Goal, A Goal

Sung to the tune of Marching Through Georgia and if you replace the words A Goal, A Goal with Hullo Hullo then you'll realise it's practically the same as The Billy Boys

Lyrics

We are the people who sing of victory,

And pull our football glory from Kilmarnock to Dundee.

We follow Glasgow Rangers; are hearts are strong and true,

We are the people who cheer the boys in blue.

A Goal! A Goal!

We're ready to acclaim.

A Goal! A Goal!

To claim another game.

We follow Glasgow Rangers, our hearts are strong and true,

We are the people who cheer the boys in blue.

We'll be there at Ibrox when Rangers take the field,

We'll follow onto triumph for we know they'll never lose.

And 60,000 voices will cheer the whole game through,

For we are the people who cheer the boys in blue.

A Goal! A Goal!

We're ready to acclaim.

A Goal! A Goal!

To win another game.

We follow Glasgow Rangers, our hearts are strong and true,

We are the people who cheer the boys in blue.

A Goal! A Goal!

We're ready to acclaim.

A Goal! A Goal!

To clinch another game.

We follow Glasgow Rangers, our hearts are strong and true,

We are the people who cheer the boys in blue.

It's a nice version, part of me feels parts of it may be slightly outdated now.

I penned a bit of a reply to Bill's original piece on the subject if anyone's interested...

I have that on an old Rangers LP from the sixties and while I like it from the past it will never catch on now. It will never replace TBB. What is needed is a basic short and gutsy verse. TBB is the same verse repeated. That is what would be required. I proposed a slight amendment to the old Gers version thus:

Hullo! Hullo!

We are the Rangers boys.

Hullo! Hullo!.

You'll know us by our noise.

We follow Glasgow Rangers, our hearts are strong and true,

We are the people who cheer the boys in blue.

Hullo hullo

We are the billy boys

Hullo hullo

You'll know us by our noise

We're up to our knees in Fenian blood surrender or you'll die

For we are the bridgton Derry boys

(tu)

Aye! I'm sure the Polis and the Scottish courts will be fine with that version

Good work Bill, it's good to see the campaign to bring it back gaining some weight.

I'd like to see us fight in the courts to bring back the old version, it's disgusting it is outlawed, makes a mockery of our legal system. Cry long and hard enough about anything that your offended by and get it outlawed seems to be the message.

My suggestion would be, if it must be changed;

Hullo! Hullo! We are the The Billy boys

Hullo! Hullo! You'll know us by our noise.

We'll sing it like we used to sing, 50 thousand strong

For we are the The Brigton Derry Boys

The line i replaced it with is actually an original lyrics from marching through Georgia. The problem with the "clean" suggestions being banded around is that the song looses it's defiance with the happy clappy versions. We need to roar, it's a war cry, not a medley about hearts being strong and true.

I think that the line is a defiant one, for the original song writer it was triumphant, as the unionist north defeated the southern rebels in the civil war. For us is triumphant & defiant, we're not only bringing back our war cry but we're rising again to the top of scottish football, '50 thousand strong' after they tried to kill us.

I like this version ,still a war cry but with a bit of a modern slant .

the original IS the Billy Boys......that version on 60's vinyl is pish and was made up because the record company didn't want the real version

just make it "up to our knees" in anything you like and it's still the Billy Boys

Bill, firstly I’m glad you’ve become involved again with this issue, but I would like to add that if the so called offending sentence has to be changed to become something more acceptable to the easily offended it should be stirring enough to be shouted as a war cry as Ricky has suggested. (metaphorically speaking of course)

The original ISN'T the billy boys.

See above.

Cut out the banned line, replace it with the "50'000 strong" line as someone mentioned above and replace Billy boys with Rangers boys.

Peter A Smith I have spoken to police who tell me word or line changes for TBB would not be accepted

By whom?

What’s happening on this forum?

Post’s are being made then quickly removed.

Last night for example, two were made in quick succession on the thread titled ‘On our youth system’

One, which was made by MisterC, with a reference to the status of a duplicated user name relative to the same IP address which implied innocence of the person involved.

The other was made by GovanBlue which if true would have meant that he was a stillborn baby and I don’t mean this as being disrespectful to you GB as this was the only conclusion that could be arrived at considering the words that you used.

The above reply from me to Californiadreamin52 is another example.

Where is the original post?

Lol @ the police saying they would no accept line changes to the song. Who the fuck are they to tell us we can't sing a song that has no sectarian elements whatsoever in it?

Stupid pigs - what they are basically saying then is its the tune they don't like

Not the tune per se but just the tune when we sing it

This should galvanise us more to get it back as soon as possible

Given that the original version goes back to the US Civil War, this discrimination against the tune clearly represents support for the Confederate States.

Hence support for slavery.

Hence the polis are behaving in a racist manner, and should be reported to themselves.

Josey Wales doesn't like this.
