Are the USA the new Scotland?

Recommended Posts

Watched them throw away the opportunity to go through and put out Portugal with around 30 seconds to go. They had three opportunities to kill the game by punting the ball out of play and instead they give it away cheap in the middle of the park, ten seconds later goal for Portugal. Made me think back to all of the similar failures we had to face at the WC and EC's over the years.

Don't think so. They are not a fledgling nation and once they get to the tournaments tend to put up a good show. They have everything geared up going forward for their future generations to become serious contenders.

Couldn't believe they have the biggest travelling support in Brazil with an estimated 200K down there for WC!

Bigger Than Baseball: 25 Million Watch U.S.-Portugal World Cup Match

TV Ratings in U.S.-Portugal Tie Show World Cup’s Draw

  • With an audience of 25 million viewers for Sunday’s game between the United States and Portugal, the World Cup is moving into elite territory as a sports property on American television. Ratings for the game were the highest for any soccer game telecast in America and reached more viewers than events like the N.B.A. finals or the World Series.
375]Sunday’s game, which ended in a 2-2 tie after Portugal scored a late goal, attracted a total of 24.7 million viewers across two television networks, ESPN and Univision. The ESPN audience alone — 18.2 million viewers — set a record for a soccer game on American television. The previous record, for the 1999 Women’s World Cup final, which was won by the United States, was 17.9 million viewers. That game was on a broadcast network — ABC — rather than cable television.

375]The Spanish-language Univision, which also aired the game, had an audience of 6.5 million viewers (up from nearly five million viewers for the United States’ opening game, against Ghana). Add in the average audience of 500,000 ESPN announced had streamed the game and the viewership surpassed 25 million.

375]While not near the totals scored by the N.F.L. playoffs or, certainly, the Super Bowl, the American audience for the World Cup game on Sunday easily eclipsed the N.B.A. finals this year, which averaged 15.5 million viewers, as well as the 2013 World Series, which averaged 14.9 million viewers. The N.H.L. playoffs are not even remotely as popular as the World Cup, having averaged only five million viewers this season.

375]ESPN reported Monday that the game was its most-watched event outside of N.F.L. or college football. But it even rivaled the audience for the B.C.S. championship game on ESPN last January. That game averaged 25.7 million viewers, only counting the ESPN numbers. Sunday’s World Cup game peaked in viewership on ESPN at 7:30 p.m. when it reached almost 23 million viewers.

375]Also, as with all major sports events, the numbers do not accurately reflect viewers who watched the game in groups — in bars and other locations.

375]The increases reflect a general surge in interest for the World Cup games, which are being hosted by Brazil. Across ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC, all owned by the Walt Disney Company, audiences for the matches thus far in the 2014 World Cup are up by 50 percent from those for the last World Cup, in South Africa in 2010. So far, the games have averaged 4.3 million viewers, up from 2.8 million in 2010. That is partly because of the more advantageous schedule in Brazil, with live games more accessible to American viewers, mainly during afternoon hours in the United States.

375]But increased interest in soccer in the United States may be helping to drive the numbers, as a generation of younger viewers who grew up playing the sport in youth leagues are now among the more devoted viewers for the sport.

375]Unless the United States advances to the knockout round, Sunday’s game could be the high-water mark for World Cup ratings because the game was played during customary hours for sports viewing. The next American game, against Germany, will be played Thursday at noon Eastern time.

375]Twitter also reported Monday that over eight million posts were sent during the United States-Portugal match. And Facebook reported about 10 million participants offering about 20 million reactions.

USA are IMO a strong emerging nation who given how they develop youth in sports they could go on to be one of the top nations, they have the resources and attitude and are unlikely to sit still.

As a sporting nation they always want to be successful and I see no reason why they can't.
