Simple answer is,it was the only way the sellic st holders at GCC could use tax payers money to upgrade the area directly outside the ground.

Sellic could not afford to pay for their lovely new Timmy Way complete with cfc crest in stone so got their supporters/shareholders at GCC to pick their ground for opening ceremony, when everyone and their dug knows it should have been the national stadium,Hampden.

Have a look at the figures of construction contracts that have been issued for the CG's. Out of over £750m spent with around £500m spent on the village, the new arenas there seems to be around £250m that was spent on upgrading sports facilities that were already in place and due to be used. When you consider how little has been spent on Ibrox and probably Hampden one really does start to wonder just how much has gone into c****c park. Other than the opening of the games are there any other events actually being held there?

These figures are not correct. The games have cost £563 Million in total.

Inigo - "These figures are not correct. The games have cost £563 Million in total."

I suppose it depends on how you categorize spending on the CG's. Even at its most conservative the article would seemingly put a cost forward of £637m.

Glasgow 2014: Analyst says £769m invested in construction deals

More than £769m has been invested in Scottish construction contracts linked to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, according to a business analyst.

A report by Barbour ABI said much of the money was spent upgrading Glasgow's sports facilities.

About £300m was accounted for by the Athletes' Village.

A combined £217m was spent on the Emirates Arena, incorporating the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, and purpose-built SSE Hydro national arena.

A total of £120m was also used to regenerate existing sports facilities in Glasgow and further afield, such as a £30m refurbishment of the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh and a £15m extension to the National Swimming Centre at Tollcross Leisure Centre.

More than £50m of post-summer regeneration work is also in the pipeline, according to Barbour ABI, which supplies data to the UK government and the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Michael Dall, lead economist at Barbour ABI, said: "There is no underestimating how much work is required to get a city ready for a global sporting event, so it's not surprising to see the huge sums of money being spent on construction contracts in and around Glasgow, both new build and regeneration, over the past year.

"With the Scottish economy now growing past its pre-recession levels, and our latest Economic & Construction Market Review showing that the country dominated medical and health, industrial and education construction contracts in the UK last month, the future is certainly looking bright for contractors over the coming months."

They have also used their (overspend allowance ) think that was another 50 million , with all this money being spent on Glasgow 2014 , why spend 30 million on the Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh , when it's not getting used .also what facilities are actually being kept , considering they are going to rip out the athletes track at Hampden ,which cost over 14 million .No wonder the construction industry will be busy , they got the job to fit it and the job to dismantle it .Not only the track but all the fencing ,concrete blocks used for anti-terrorism and all the tents splattered over the place ,not to mention all the services ffs

Closing is at Hampden

Yeah ,just before they rip up the athletes track ffs

I wonder if the analyst's £769m included the cost of the would be demolition of the Red Road flats that they were going to tag on to the CG's even though they had been planning to bring them down previously. I really hope we get a full disclosure of all costs and to whom contracts were issued, though I doubt if we will see any of these prior to late 2015 to mid 2016. Like most on here I would most of all like to see an accurate tally of exactly what was spent on each individual venue.

Personally I get a feeling that by the time everything is added in the total cost of the CG's might end up somewhere between £800m and £900m when all of the hospitality, publicity, and security costs are added in.

Brombrox - "why spend 30 million on the Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh"

That one puzzled me as well, surely for £30m plus the £15m used or improving Tollcross they could have built a brand new aquatics centre in Glasgow that would have handled both types of event. After we have been lead to believe that they are the Glasgow games. Like a number of people on here I suspect that in a couple of years or so that the GCC will announce that it can no longer afford the running and maintenance costs of the new facilities in the east end and they will then be sold of to a certain football club for a fraction of the construction costs. So what would they have done with an aquatics centre? Not a lot, so therefore none was built.

It is one thing to sell the idea of changing the use of venues to ones that would be of use to a local football club rather than seeing them close down and fall into disrepair, but it would not be so easy to sell the idea that a relatively new aquatics centre might have to be bulldozed.

Hypothetically could it be their long term plan to off load Lennoxtown and fully move their training facilities to the east end? If planning permission was ever to be granted for housing on their current Lennoxtown site they could stand to make a very large financial killing especially when you consider how their ownership of that land would seem to have come about. One might be forgiven for thinking that it would be the sort of plan that would also keep a certain bank very happy.
