Not that it's relevant now but our manager was known as Warbo to many of the Watford academy staff.

Googled "Warbo" just out of curiosity to see if any articles appeared to back up your claim (no offence).

The top result was interesting, makes it all the more suspect that the closet taig OP would want him to be called that in the first place.

A DOF should only be a bridge between the manager and the board. They should be a board member delegated to handle the executive footballing matters of the club and have nothing to do with day to day running of the team. If the scouts/manager fancy a player they should pass it to the DOF to handle the negotiation and subsequent transfer and paperwork etc.

The managers job is run the team, organise training, scout new players, handle tactics and match days etc.

Obviously there are blurred lines and crossovers but if set up correctly, they should work together. It's not really anything new. At the moment, a manager spots a player and then has to pass it to the board in general to do the necessary. The person on the board who does it may not be the best choice to handle the negotiation and it goes bad.

It should never be a competition as the two positions have different responsibilities. One is towards the board and the other is towards the team.

I see no reason it wouldn't work if it was organised right. It's more an executive role and would not involve being an overseer of the manager. In many ways its no different to the director of Finance and the people who run the office.
