Just glad to be back in Europe. Couldn't care how long, what round etc... Just good to be back. Sometime ago, a lot of us thought we would never see this again in our lives.

You know people that thought we'd never finish at least 3rd again?

Sorry if this has been posted elsewhere but the sheep are now straight into round 2 of this competition for finishing second, whereas we are still in first round and unseeded.

I thought that was only the case if Man U win the europa league ?

I can't see us going too far given the time we have left to get players in , fit and gel together. If we manage to the group stages we will have done well.

It will be a fucking miracle.

No chance we will reach the group stages

We'll be out first round. We're fucking rank.

Are we seeded in the first round? If so we'll be fine.

Can't see us getting by the second round though, some decent teams in there

I think we stand a better chance of progressing through the qualifying rounds by actually playing the first round. An extra couple of competitive games to allow the new players to gel and the team get back to full match fitness after the close season before a possible tricky tie in Q2 should help.

Apologies for referring to them by their nickname for quickness.

Didn't realise we were supposed to care about them enough for that to be an issue.

Pretty friendly sort of nickname. Do you talk about "the Bhoys" or "the Celts" as well?

I've been in touch with Bert Kassies and he has now updated the relevant section of his site (not because I asked I hasten to add), as follows:

Since the Champions League title holder (Real Madrid or Juventus) already qualified for at least the play-off round of the Champions League, the Europa League title holder (Ajax or Manchester United) will gain access to the play-off round or the group stage of the Champions League, and leave an open spot in the access list. If Manchester United wins the Europa League then there will be an open spot in the Europa League group stage. If Ajax wins the Europa League then there will be only 8 teams in the 3rd qualifying round of the Champions League, which implies an open spot in the play-off round of the Europa League.

In both cases the open spot will be taken by the cup winner of the 13th country on the ranking list (Czech Republic). The cup winner of the 18th country on the ranking list (Poland) has direct access to the 3rd qualifying round, and the cup winners of the 25th and 26th countries on the ranking list (Scotland and Azerbaijan) have direct access to the 2nd qualifying round of the Europa League.

Aberdeen get this place if they win the Cup or if they finish 2nd in the League, because the Cup losers don't benefit.

At this moment we are NOT seeded in Q1; however, we are next in line with a coefficient of 3.875 made up entirely of 20% of Scotland's other Clubs because we have been out of Europe for the past 5 seasons.

It's my guess that we will be seeded which means that possible opponents include Shamrock Rovers, Derry City, Cork City from Ireland, Coleraine and Ballymena from NIR, Connah's Quay, Bala Town and Bangor City from Wales, as well as teams from Georgia, Estonia, Latvia, Finland, The Faroes, Iceland, Hungary, Lithuania, Armenia, Georgia, Latvia, Kosova, Albania, Gibraltar and Malta.

Given that the first round is regionalised it would seem quite likely that we might end up in Wales, or some part of Ireland.

We will not be seeded in Q2, which is where our problems will start against the likes of

Hajduk Split (*) Cro 11.550 . Dinamo Minsk * Bls 10.975 . Apollon Limassol (*) Cyp 10.710 . HJK Helsinki * Fin 10.530 . AIK Stockholm * Swe 9.945 . Brøndby IF Den 8.800 . AEL Limassol * Cyp 8.210 . I've heard this before, but can't find any confirmation on a UEFA website. Can you confirm where you've seen this (then I can send it on to my Ballymena United supporting mate who is panicking about a long flight).

Although the regulations no longer require the use of regional groups (as used before 2009), UEFA still uses some kind of regionalization in the first qualifying rounds. At first the clubs are divided into seeded and unseeded teams, and then the seeded and unseeded teams are split into regional groups. The general approach seems to use the North/Central/South scheme, but no specific rules are known.

https://kassiesa.home.xs4all.nl/bert/uefa/seedel2017.html

Bert Kassies is usually correct.

This is how it resulted this season

In the qualifying rounds the teams are divided into groups with the same number of seeded and unseeded teams. A few hours before the draw a computer system is used to prepare the groups such that teams of the same association are not in the same group and and that all groups are about equal strength (in terms of ranking). Then all clubs in each group are ordered randomly and identified by a number. For these draws there are only two bowls with numbered balls, one with the seeded numbers and one with the unseeded numbers. The draw determines the pairs in the groups: e.g. (7 vs 4) which means that the 7th team of each group plays against the 4th club of each group.

For the draw of the 1st round the 96 teams are divided into 8 groups of 10 teams and 2 group of 8 teams. For the groups with 10 teams the pairs (5 vs 7), (9 vs 2), (1 vs 10), (4 vs 6), and (3 vs 8) were drawn, and for the group with 8 teams the pairs (6 vs 3), (2 vs 7), (8 vs 4), and (5 vs 1) were drawn. The draw groups were as follows:
Group 1
seeded: Stabæk IF, Hearts FC, Linfield Belfast, FK Ventspils, FC Midtjylland
unseeded: Víkingur, Suduva Marijampole, Cork City, Infonet Tallinn, Connah's Quay
Group 2
seeded: IFK Göteborg, HJK Helsinki, KR Reykjavik, St. Patrick's Athletic, Levadia Tallinn
unseeded: Jeunesse d'Esch, HB Torshavn, Glenavon, Atlantas Klaipeda, Llandudno FC
Group 3
seeded: Aberdeen, Brøndby IF, Dinamo Minsk, Kalju Nomme, Shamrock Rovers
unseeded: FK Trakai, RoPS Rovaniemi, Spartaks Jurmala, Valur Reykjavik, CS Fola Esch
Group 4
seeded: AIK Stockholm, Shakhtior Saligorsk, Odd Grenland, Differdange 03, Breidablik
unseeded: Cliftonville, FK Jelgava, IFK Mariehamn, NSI Runavik, Bala Town
Group 5
seeded: AEK Larnaca, Vojvodina Novi Sad, Siroki Brijeg, Dila Gori, NK Domzale
unseeded: Shirak Gyumri, FC Lusitanos, Birkirkara, Bokelj Kotor, Folgore
Group 6
seeded: Pyunik Yerevan, Lokomotiva Zagreb, Rabotnicki Skopje, Cukaricki Belgrade, Videoton Fehérvár
unseeded: Ordabasy Shymkent, Zaria Balti, Buducnost Podgorica, UE Santa Coloma, Europa FC
Group 7
seeded: FK Kukësi, Beitar Jerusalem, Admira Wacker, Neftchi Baku, Zimbru Chisinau
unseeded: Balzan FC, Chikhura Sachkhere, Spartak Myjava, Sloboda Tuzla, Rudar Pljevlja
Group 8
seeded: FC Vaduz, DVSC Debrecen, Gabala FK, Maccabi Tel-Aviv, FC Beroe Stara Zagora
unseeded: Nova Gorica, Radnik Bijeljina, Samtredia, La Fiorita, Sileks Kratovo
Group 9
seeded: Cracovia Kraków, Spartak Trnava, Kairat Almaty, Omonia Nicosia
unseeded: Shkendija Tetovo, Teuta Durrës, Hibernians FC, Banants Yerevan
Group 10
seeded: Dacia Chisinau, FK Aktobe, Zaglebie Lubin, Slovan Bratislava
unseeded: Kapaz Ganja, Slavia Sofia, MTK Budapest, Partizani Tirana

Note that regional in terms of Scotland might still mean Georgia!
