There's nothing like proving your point by using a historically wrongly attributed quote to prove your point.

Twain said, quoting Benjamin Disraeli. Except there's no record of Disreali having ever used it at any point, either spoken or in any written work.

And it's an utterly meaningless quote regardless of who said it.

To take any pressure off Tav?

I’m not saying he did or didn’t btw but that would be one reason.

Does it really take the pressure off Tav when we've got our own fans suggesting it's all just a smokescreen to protect him rather than taking the manager's comments at face value?

Maybe he felt that as a good manager he should try.

Makes his captain look better by taking the decision out of his hands  ... Morelos should never have been anywhere near that penalty on Sunday he had already missed a few

Does it make his captain look better though? The decision was never in Tavernier's hands. It was always Gerrard's decision. He said that last time after there was a row over who took a penalty (Defoe & Morelos maybe?)

Maybe, think it's more likely that a decision was made after Tav's last miss (both Gerrard and Tavernier said there would be a discussion over it at the time).

If you've got a player deciding on a whim he's taking the penalty in spite of the manager picking someone else to play, then he's got bigger things to worry about than protecting Tavernier from criticism.

Gerrard may well have said to Tav depending on how the game is going it's your decision

Twain popularised it, the point is statistics can be used to misinterpret the truth and you doing so contributes to prove Twain’s quote, secondhand as it might be.

Without giving any basis on how many failed assists which is what annoys me most about Tavernier then your statistics is as you quoted”speaking shite”

So he popularised a quote by misattributing a quote. Magic.

A 'failed assist'? What is a failed assist?

One of his corners that fail to get past the first man, or one of his crosses that go out out for a throwing at the opposite side, that’s two contributions to a “failed assist “

So an incomplete pass is now a 'failed assist'?

Does this criteria apply to any particular passes or just ones from Tavernier?
