Sorry RP but we lost 2-0, 3-2 & 0-3 playing only one up front in the CL, defensive, fear football, perhaps you

1 should read the whole article

2 Realise that every once in a while, no matter who it is, people will tell it like it is, with little falsehood (for a change).

We had 3 chances to get 10 points that would have seen us qualify after over achieving, we were then in a position imo of nothing to lose, esp. when Stuttgart lost their first 4 games to be completely out of the picture. Is that acceptable in your eyes? The quality of football we are watching is atrocious.

One of those games was against Barcelona in the Nou Camp. They beat the other two sides by 2. Losing by two goals in the Nou Camp is no disgrace.

And we've won 2-1 (Stuttgart), 3-0 (Lyon) and 3-0 (Celtic) playing one up top. Try telling some of the top european coaches across europe that they're being too negative playing one up top and they'll bat you around the ears and tell you to stand in the corner........

After our top european coach, that many of our support went crazy over like a bunch of gushing school girls greeting a boyband, failed miserably, Walter arrived on the scene with a mess to clear up.

In that time, he's secured second place. Beaten Celtic 3 times. Got us to 2 points off the top with two games in hand. And secured 3rd place in a group that everyone was saying beforehand we'd be lucky to finish 3rd place in.

He's getting results. He's taken us forward. But there is no magic wand. Perfect results and great performances won't just happen over night. Our squad is mediocre. Last season it was pish poor. Next season, we might have a decent to good squad capable of playing more attractive football. Lets just not expect miracles over night.

I don't agree with the article or the over the top criticism Smith has received this season.

Boyd ahead of Cousin ? Who watched Boyd on Saturday ? Pish, again. And he was pish against Motherwell at Fir Park when Naismith partnered him too, so that isn't a combo that was ever going to transfer onto the champs league stage with any success either. Cousin was crap, but at least he has it within him to play the lone role competently at that level. He failed to produce, Smith took him off at half time. But I think Walter was right to start him in the first place. Boyd would have made feck all difference in that game.

Walter Smith will get the hero worship treatment again if he wins us the title in May. As he did after the Lyon game and the Old Firm game. It really is just so damn fickle when things go wrong. If before we started the champs league campaign, we were told that we will finish 3rd spot in that group, the fans would have been delighted. But because Walter did and the team did so well initially, hopes were raised and they're now being beaten about the head for not qualifying !

We were beaten because of a gulf in quality against Lyon, not tactics. 4-4-2, Buffel (christ, this guy has turned into a world beater from a chicken hearted fraud in a matter of months !) Boyd.............would have made no difference against Lyon. They are a quality side with quality players, and we were always getting beaten that night. Barcelona and Lyon are two vastly superior sides, and we competed well away from home against the German champions in a game that could have gone either way. We lost the 3rd goal after switching to 4-4-2 remember.

Smith has made some tactical mistakes this season in my view, you only have to look back to Saturday. But the big picture is, we are 2 points behind with 2 games in hand, and picked up 7 points in one hell of a tough group. If anyone can say that before the season started they would have been criticised Smith heavily for that.........I don't believe you.

Some of the plaudits Smith is going to receive from some of our fans is going to be very f*cking hollow come the end of the season. The treatment of the man after the Lyon game from some supporters was embarrassing. Get over it, we've got a league to win. You know, that thing that we all said with such sincerity at the start of the season was in fact our priority, and what Walter would be judged on.

there is a crucial difference between those wins and what we witnessed the last three matches of the CL was a disgrace, 5 fouls commited in the Nou Camp, smacks to me of giving up before we even went on the pitch - unnacceptable regardless of damage limitation. Stuttgart were pish we should have went for the jugular. Lyon's defence were pish and we tested them once in the whole game. We are unimaginative and our major opponents will get the measure of us. Against the tims we had a bit of pace in the team at least to support the lone striker.

Most importantly to be only 2 points behind this Sellik team is no great shakes because they are pish.

We have flair / imaginitve players WS does not play them because he is in self preservation mode for certain games and on Saturday he got very very lucky.

Not Good Enough.

Also it helps a lot if your opponents are totally otuplaying you and they continue to miss chances.

I hate the bassa personally, but I do agree with a lot of what he said. Unfortunately, he then sticks utter shite like this on at the end :

"PS: How about “if they go to Dublin we will follow on†drowning out the Champions League Anthem?

The extremists now have their wish as the UEFA Cup surely takes you to such unfashionable football outposts!"

Just what the hell is he insinuating here?! Maybe, just MAYBE the crowd sang it because we were proud of our team, ya midgie raker. As if it were intentionally sung to drown out the CL theme - you couldn't make this stuff up, but he sure tries hard to!

Its tough being the underdog, DO. I agree. But when youre a nation of 5M against nations of 50M, 40M and 80M then sometime you've just gotta accept that the rub of the green will go against us sometimes. we punch above our weight as Rangers because of the massive support our team has. But we also suffer because of the size of nation it belongs to. and that reality comes home to roost more times than we would like. None of these facts make WS a bad manager or BF a bad captain or JCD a bad centre forward. But we must realise that we have to work within the confines of our environment. and within Scotland, without the kind of money our league or nation entitles us to (as with the english for example), that is a very small environment.

bottom line; even when we're punching above our weight, the spending power and ultimate quality of the larger nations teams will always outdo us. and thats what happened this year - whether we like it or not. in order to progress to the CL final stages, we have to accept that we have to just get plain LUCKY - like the jungles did this year.

Celtic are pish ? Perhaps. But my god, so are we. But pish is still better than the sinking ship Smith took over from PLG. We could have finished outside the top two again if we'd carried on like that, no question. All we can hope for this season is to be the best of a bad bunch. Helicopter Sunday is brought up time and time again as one of the greatest highlights in our history........that team was utter garbage. But over 38 games, they were also the best in the SPL. And we loved it. The fact we never pushed on from there was unacceptable, but at the time, it was great.

And just now should be great too. We're rebuilding still, and should be pleased with the progress we've made in less than a year. I mean, Stuttgart are pish ? Really ? The German champions. I'm not saying they are in fact the best team in Germany, but they're a good side. Didn't go for the juglar ? We scored two goals and created a good number of chances. The game could have gone either way. At 2-2, we went 4-4-2.........and lost the 3rd goal.

A bit of realism is required, and an appreciation that it will take time for Smith to create the finished article. Winning ugly this year should be acceptable to everyone. Haven't won the title for 2 years, our PLG masterplan failed miserably........so lets just win the f*cking thing. If we're playing bad football, disappointing, but for now.......results, results, results.......that's all it's about. Then give Smith another summer to rebuild further.......and sit back a couple of months into next season, and reassess whether or not we have progressed from where we are now.

WS is a good man and a great manager in his own style. In Europe however he seems a wee bit lost. He found a system that with some breaks gave us a tremendous chance in the CL, but when in the last two games he needed to be adventurous he could not bring himself to do it. He is too slow to adapt to what is happening on the field at times and when finding himself behind takes eons to make changes. He was REALLY LUCKY vs Hearts this past Saturday. Slow to make changes - the GK saved an embarrassing draw.

lets play 2-3-5 just like we did in the old days and won everything, baxter and company did not give a monkeys who they were playing they were scared of nobody.

There was a story about Baxter in the team talk before a Scotland game. The manager was showing the opposition set up and drawing lines to show how to breach their defence and Baxter sat for a couple of minutes and then said something like" christ, they look really shite, so lets go out and hammer them"

We should make the opposition worry about us not go out in fear of the opposition every game.

Let's all give him a prize for stating the bloody obvious.

Anyone can gauge the fans thoughts by looking at forums and listening to phone-ins. This prick just went that wee bit further and chucked in his usual shite at the end.

While some of what he says rings true, I just can't stomach the dickhead.

nothing more than the usual desperate attempt to drum up some noise around his column/paper. nothing new, nothing original, nothing constructive - the 'how hutton should have been used' part makes his 'walter is tactically inept' line somewhat ironic - in short, a lot of piss and wind from a man who has been washed up for the last decade.

let's recall the fat one last season when we were being outplayed right left and centre. 'rangers are going nowhere' was his line. 'rangers fans need to get a grip on reality' was another. this season, an (imo) excellent european run (which isn't over) and a superb chance at the title. oh, wait, his line has changed...we're not going 'nowhere' apparently, we're just not very good to watch!

this reads like nothing so much as the dim witted tim at the end of the bar who can't stomach ANYTHING positive about the rangers. i haven't heard anyone saying 'bugger me, we're just like arsenal!' we all know we're staggering thru games and we are way short of REAL creativity...for that very reason we're playing hard to beat and picking up 3 points more often than not. this may stick in the craw of those who hate to see us do well...i couldn't care less!

Its actually spot on, he's saying what a lot of us are saying. I though the last parragraph was a bit pointless though. What was the need?

There was no need, But as I said he only used what we already knew about US to stick the knife in, also he hopes WE all start screaming for Walters head just when his beloved hoops are beginning to look vunerable ! Anyway I'm more concerned about uncle Gerry's health and if he's reading this I hope he's careful I know he has heart problems and I would hate this cold snap to bring out any weaknesses at his age ! Also Gerry please be careful if you are doin any late night Xmas shopping as the conditions under foot is a very slippy, I would hate for you fall in some quiet area and smash your head against the kerb where you would lie all night and slowly freeze to death  So be careful uncle Gerry, I think your a great journo and I would miss your impartial reporting if you were DEAD ! ;):sherlock:

I'd say that 90% of McNee's column/rant is about right and most of it has been discussed on this forum almost word for word. There are still long term problems at Rangers and David Murray still has a job on his hands. We did hand the game to Lyon and very nearly blew it v Hearts.

His last five lines were rubbish, tho'.
