Surely we need to adopt a back 3

    Souttar Goldson Davies

There can be no other option moving forward

Barisic and Tav can start higher up the pitch and provide the width our manager is craving

This also alleviates 1 holding midfielder

So lose a striker or midfielder to protect a central defender who has always been a liability in terms of defending as well as fitness? He is not going to change or improve his awareness or concentration so play someone else rather than add another  cb to cover for him.

I think we will win this I base this on us having more game time together with the Champions League qualifiers plus our strikers are going to come good at some point.

Our weak point will be who the manager selects and what teams he's picks to play against them. I think we have the players to win this.

Love the pre derby optimism but will our coaching team really improve these strikers so much that they will become decent strikers even in this footballing backwater? I looked at our forward players in the new squad and it fills me with dread that we may be depending on Roofe to be the striker to have a decent goals tally.

My other fear is the way our midfield now let opponents stroll unopposed to our final third and are able to find free colleagues with so much space to make crosses, one two's etc. Also I have no clues about what sort of set up we will play or how Beale wants us to play.

One consolation is that they seem as disjointed as us which gives me a glimmer of hope rather than optimism.

Orange County have been a partner of us for years now, we run academy education programs and stuff for them every summer, their staff come over here, we send players to them etc etc.

So how does shit like this end up happening?

Wtfs the point in the partnership?

We have had Chinese, Australian ,USA partnerships with no benefit to us in terms of talent recruitment which is no surprise considering the minimal success in our own academy bringing through first team starters in the last 20 years.

Could be wrong but I think the £30 million includes broadcasting the SPWL as well although I do not know their share.

Thought the  momentary said the Dutch league Tav money was 180 million.

I think their current deal still runs for another 2 years

Ours is £30m split between 12 , theirs is about €80m split between 18 - at the end of the year, the 'big 3' in the Netherlands don't walk away with much more than we get (as it stands)

The key distinction in revenue generation currently (and historically) is centred around player sales

Could be wrong but I think the £30 million includes broadcasting the SPWL as well although I do not know their share.

  6. I have no confidence in our new trio of “strikers” Dessers  appears to be the number one choice but cannot hold up the ball has poor control, positioning and poor heading and shooting ability. Lammers loses possession too much. Danilo must be worse than both on the training pitch.

Midfield is  not pressing opponents or  helping our defence which needs help. Souttar still has the mistakes, the stupid lunges and concentration lapses which I used to love when he was in the team sheet against us. Left back will be a problem with no left footed optionsThen there is the tactics.

  7. The full backs have had no real protection from midfield this and last season and we all knew how PSV play with the wide players hugging the touch line. Bayayoko was consistently left alone with Barasic tucking in rather than staying wide. Tav was closer to Lang but with Dest teaming up as well Cifuentes needed to be more aware and more concentrated although the tempo and quality he was facing looked to be well beyond  his capability and experience.

  8. PSV paid 27 million euros for 2 players. The Dutch tv money  is 6 times more than that for SPFL. Loan players from Barca and Bayern. However, they recruit so much better with a type and style in mind to suit their system while we seem to recruit from a narrow field every season, Belgian league last year Dutch this tear with no seeming strategy in mind.

I like Dessers, but I thought he was shite today. Danilo is getting ripped off for minutes.

Lammers has to improve his sloppy player if he wants to play more. He is clearly skillful.

Lammers worries me; has the touches but the amount of times he loses the ball so easily is terrible and dangerous against any decent opposition. Desserts is busy enough but I am not convinced of his ability to be a double figure scorer.

Play 3 at the back and 1 sitting play 4 at the back (two attacking fullbacks) and 2 sitting

Both systems have 4 defensive minded players

My concern is that whilst it looks fine on paper the system can create so many negatives in practice. A lot of the time it forces a back 5 system and allows opponents free control of the game, tempo and stifles forward play. The common danger of  causing confusion between wing back and wide centre back over  who to go to tackle a player running between them. Since 34 plus domestic games we face teams who park the bus having 3 central defenders is an overkill and makes no sense. Playing it in specific games takes a lot of intense preparations, hard work and extreme concentration which sadly has not been a strength in recent years. The group stages last season where Gio tried it albeit with poor or I’ll fitting personnel was embarrassing.

I feel our problem defensively is still losing focus, poor concentration, failure to attack set piece crosses, failure to close down in midfield quickly enough to prevent free crosses or opponents running through with the ball. Also our midfield last season seemed to stop slotting back to cover our attacking full backs although a simple idea is to drill that only one full back goes on the attack at a time, or do what Walter did for most of 9 in a row to ensure that; play a central defender in one of the full back positions.

However, the suggestion of a 3 or 5 at the back or one attacking full back etc is a moot point as Beale seems to have decided how he wants to play although we can all predict what tends to happen.

3 at the back is the way to go

More protection and gives us more width in attack with Borna and Tav being able to get forward a bit more and closer to providing for the strikers.

Our full backs are going to play as they always do, Adding another central defender means taking out a forward or a midfielder. The other problem is creating the area of uncertainty between full backs and left or right central defender and I am not confident that our players are capable to adapt and make decisions in picking up in these areas when they seem to have trouble doing so in a simple back four.

Listened to a great Tifo podcast on the plane for tactics for the season ahead and one of the key themes was teams playing narrower.

    It’s not just us.

True, more and more managers are trying to copy Pep but they do not have the players or the possession that makes it work for Man City. Pep, in his first season with City tried to play his full backs as narrow midfielders but it failed. Now he has the players with  phenomenal possession stats who are able to play in that way or any other way if they want but it was interesting that the consistency last season was when playing a central defender or at times 2 in the full back role.Walter would appreciate that.
Less talented teams trying to push full backs into central midfield and playing  the inverted winger just seem to strangle themselves going forward and allow their opponents freedom in wide areas.
I see Liverpool are trying to play Alexander Arnold in the hybrid full back central midfield role even though his strength was crosses from open play as well as his dead ball acumen. Seems a shame to waste his crossing assists contribution ny following a trend.
