    Are we though?

Very far from perfect and way too many injuries but a shite team wouldn't have won 3-2 in Spain the other night.

I agree that over time with his own players Clement will make us exponentially better but he's already turned a team of losers into something much much better.

Tomorrow is very telling for me on this front.

There are a number of players in this squad that have let themselves (and more importantly the club and support) down in big moments for a number of years and the summer signings haven’t exactly come in and improved things - Butland and Sima apart.

But we are also unbeaten under Clement for a decent number of games with signs that there is a philosophy and mentality taking shape that has been missing since 55. A win tomorrow gives us all (including some of the players I would suggest) the confidence that this team has the mentality to take advantage of the implosion happening across the city.

Aye this is the biggest issue we have. If we beat them, we will be a point ahead with a game in hand.

A draw there will do just fine given the circumstances.

That assumes they are getting full point vs Livingston and Dundee in their fixtures before the OF… 😂

Seriously though we need to keep the current form going in to the Old Firm and ramp up the pressure. They have been an implosion waiting to happen this year but our early season form (the Beale effect) kept them at bay. We just need to listen to the manager, take one game at a time and realise we are in a marathon so keep the perspective if a slip comes along.

I really hope the board grasp what is at stake and move heaven and earth to give Clement some reinforcements to bring home 56!

  3. You just wouldn’t put it past him to score the winner at the weekend and then have to go off injured and be out for another 6 months…

No doubting his qualities and if he could stay fit he would be a major asset, however history has shown he just can’t and we can’t afford to be carrying him as a luxury player to play 10 / 15 games a season for us.

  4. Big change is now teams think they might have an outside chance against them.

Most teams took to the pitch against them under Postecoglu and were probably thinking “lets just not get horsed here…” while probably thinking they might have a chance of sneaking something against us.

Reality is that most teams are still going to try and contain them (and us) and try and sneak something on the break, but the more often it happens the more confidence the opposition are going to have and it generates an attitude of “well if Killie can do it, we are better than Killie so we should be able to”.

  5. Given the injuries I think it is vital we get to the winter break no further behind than where we are now.

We have St Johnstone (h), Motherwell (a) & Ross County (h) while they have Hearts (h), Livingston (h) & Dundee (a) before the OF; then we have Kilmarnock at home and they go to St Mirren before the winter break.

On paper neither of us should be dropping point in that run of games (with theirs being marginally trickier for me) so vital we avoid defeat in the OF and get 4 wins outside of that, get to the winter break no more than 5 behind (with a game in hand) and the chance to get some bodies back / new players in and the league is very much ours for the taking.

Cup final is vital to that as well. It will go some way to quieting down the questions of mentality around this squad and also give a boost to confidence for the rest of the season.

To be honest Europe is a bit of a side issue for me given everything that has gone on this season and I can’t say I am overly fussed whether we play Europa or Conference. If you gave me a defeat to Betis (with the caveat that we gave it a go, were beaten by a better team but not embarrassed) and then lift the cup I would bite your hand off for it right now.

Cantwell was hurt in a tackle, I don’t think we can really use injuries as a result of a tackle to have a go at our medical department.

Thought there was an interesting line in the pre-match presser where Clement talked about giving players individual workouts to strengthen muscles they weren’t using during the game / training.

Wonder if he is of the opinion something all the lines that our strength and conditioning work has been too focussed on certain criteria (i.e. top sprinting speed or stamina) and as a result we lack an all round strength that could help a players body absorb some of the knocks that we pick up.

Obviously there are always going some injuries that are going to happen but we seem to pick up an abnormal amount of injuries from contact during the game vs general muscle pulls that you would normally expect.

    Yes. This is the problem.

Honestly, the Danilo one (among many) really baffles me. Clear to play Hearts on the Wednesday night, but by Friday he will be out for months and he needs surgery.

Unless Danilo was injured on the Wednesday night and I'm being unfair to them here, but that to the side it feel like the treatment the players receive must be from the 19th Century.

PC said it was the result of a tackle during the Hearts game.

  8. Think he will probably get a new deal.

We are going to have a massive overhaul of the squad in the next 12 / 18 months but pragmatically we can’t just sign 25 new players, so are going to have to accept that some of the squad are going to be around a little longer.

To be fair he has been one of the better performers this season so if there is a choice of keeping say 2 out of Jack, Lundstrum, Cifuentes or Raskin for the CM options Lundstrum would probably be one of the two.

Honestly I think that sums up the kind of night it was, fucking Lammers heading a ball to absolutely no one and then having a go at the one that made the pass for not being there to get his header.

    What a fucking diddy.

I’m genuinely struggling to understand why he was brought on.

Fine if Cantwell was tiring he needed fresh legs (I actually thought Cantwell was still our most energetic player) but WTF is Lammers actually going to bring to the game? Would have been better with Matondo to give us an out all and push Sima up top if he really felt Cantwell needed to come off.

  10. I get the annoyance over the lack of “real” points being put to the board, but I am not sure what anyone expects to get out of an AGM.

The board are generally going to come in to it with the points they want to put across and then either “take away for further discussion” anything that they have not thought about (eg the point about the NI busses) or give non committal answers to anything that is too close to the bone.

Say someone had actually asked about the summer clusterfuck I expect there would have been a pre-prepared answer that would have outlined Wilson leaving left them in a difficult position without enough time to appoint a new DofF, Beale was supported in his targets however that did not work out and the board have now taken steps to resolve the issue through recruitment.

Appointing a DOF who has never been a DOF? Most Rangers thing ever that. Hope he does well, he needs too

Get the sentiment but with our resources (both in terms of transfer budget and how much we are probably able to pay for the role) realistically we are either taking:

    - someone who has never done the role but a growing reputation / CV in a similar role and is looking to step up

    - someone who is doing the job at a smaller club but whose experiences / contacts probably aren’t at the level we are looking at

    - someone who has done the job but has been sacked

Each one of them could have a similar type of comment to the “he hasn’t done the job”

By all accounts PSV’s transfer business over the last 12 / 18 months has been pretty decent so if he has had a role in that I think it’s probably worth the gamble in terms of what he might be able to bring to the role.

  12. This is a bit of good news and to be honest wasn’t expecting it as there had been no real chat.

Interesting that he has previously worked with PC so maybe a bit more optimistic that we could see some January business if he already has an understanding of the type of player required to fit the system.

Biggest issue is going to be getting money available for incomings as we wasted so much in the summer

I’m happy a manager has the balls to make a change when he perceives something is not working. It shows responsibility and it is what I want a Rangers manager to show. Cantwell will be a tricky one to manage now though and this will be a test of Clement’s man management.

He’s off form for sure but I’m also not sure why Clement feels he’s better on the right than in the 10. Lammers seems to get a free pass there currently and I’d rather Lawrence and Cantwell fought for that position.

I don’t think this is so much making a change when something wasn’t working as much as sending a message to Cantwell / the squad that if you don’t do the role you are asked to you won’t play.

If it was about taking players off who weren’t working or just not playing well then Sima and Lammers should have been off at half time / long before they were as their performances were every bit as poor as Cantwell.

It’s not the first time we have been left baffled how player X (usually Lammers) has stayed on the pitch for so long when he is clearly underperforming.

There has been a certain amount of understanding for PC so far in that we are limited in options in some areas, however I can see the Lammers / Cantwell thing becoming a bit of a point of contention amongst the support as we now should be playing McAusland on the right so don’t need Cantwell out there. Lammers has offered nothing and Cantwell probably still has enough backing in support who feel he should at least be given the chance to prove why he should be in the no 10 role.

  14. I think he is a decent all round striker without being exceptional in any one area.

The service to him has been particularly poor for the last couple of games, but I also think he is struggling at the moment as we are mainly coming up against teams who are sitting back and limiting space with physical defenders. He doesn’t have the nous to find pockets of space like Roofe; the physicality to dominate and move defenders around like peak Morelos; nor the predatory instinct to just be in the right place at the right time like a Boyd or McCoist.

I think we would probably see the best out of him if we could partner him in a 2 with someone that has a bit more physical presence but not sure we are going 2 up top any time soon.

  15. I don’t think PC handled that correctly tonight. Not defending Cantwell in any way (especially if he has been specifically asked to stay wide and is choosing not to) but taking him off when he did:

    - singles him out when the whole team were underperforming

    - puts massive pressure on McAusland coming on in those circumstances

    - takes away one of the “windows” to make a sub in the second half

He could have taken him off at half time and it would have had a similar, if slightly less pointed, message.

As it stands that decision is going to be a massive talking point and used to frame future selection / performances over the next few weeks - hopefully we are looking back on it at the point where it sank in for Cantwell and he kicks on, but if he keeps performing at the levels he has been this season it is just another layer of discussion and pressure that we have (relatively) needlessly put on him.

Going forward I think we have established that Cantwell can’t (won’t) play RW the way PC wants so the shirt has to be McAusland’s; I don’t think Lammers has done anything to deserve being near the team so would give Cantwell game time in the 10 and move Lawrence to the left (Sima has offered very little since his purple goal patch but that was a while ago now).

  16. MOTM tonight for me tonight.  Was a bit ropey when he first came on but was best player on the park second half.

Shirt should be his going forward (and we might have just stumbled into at least sorting the RW position that has been a problem for so long…)

  17. Was poor tonight but willing to give him a bit more time to settle because of injuries.

Ideally Raskin or Jack are fit to let him play his way back in from injury but he is having to start and then there is no one to replace him when he is poor.

There'll be next to fuck all budget for transfers in Jan, it'll be loans or pushing summer departures out 1/2 a season early.

Unless any new DOF has been working on stuff already then its probably too late to come in and have any meaningful impact in the coming window.

We can hope and demand otherwise but imo that's the reality of it.

More likely the DOF himself will be our only arrival in Jan 😒

Spot on. From listening to folk on the inside in various articles / podcasts the majority of transfers these days start months before in the background as the deal structures can get very complicated.

Obviously there is still the possibility of something coming together quickly if all parties want it to (Bassey & Hagi’s transfer / loan come to mind).

Also given how much of a clusterfuck our transfers have been recently I don’t think it is a great suggestion to bring someone in and then effectively start making panic buys with less than a months work. We might see one or two in by the end of the window in a combination of stuff the scouting team we have have been looking at with input from a new DofF; but we need a sustained period of successful transfer windows to reshape the squad and I actually think keeping our powder dry in January and giving the new DofF time to work with Clement and plan (with potentially a little extra resource that we don’t spend) for the summer window might serve us better in the long term.

  19. Barisic’s time should 100% be up (should have finished last year TBH).

Lundstrum does a job in the middle of the park but the position is so critical his limitations / when he is having a bad game hold the whole team back. We either need Raskin to step into that role (don’t think any of the CMs currently at the club can do it) or replace him.

Goldson is still probably our best CB but we should be looking to sign better so his time diminishes.

Same with Tav. I actually think Clement has changed his role to take into account he doesn’t have the legs he did 5 years ago but we need to be looking at finding his successor(s) pretty quickly.

The fact that these 4 are still mainstays in the team and there has been little effort to recruit the next person to take their jersey (or in Bona’s case have fucked it so spectacularly with Yilmaz) speaks to how farcical our recruitment has been since we won 55.

  20. I’m going to be controversial and say the fact we dug out a draw shows we do have some mentality in the team.

For me today was more a reflection on how poorly we recruited for the front areas over the summer. Our biggest chances came from defenders at set plays or midfielders who were already at the club.

In the first half they pressed us high and we managed to break through it pretty well but then had very little from the forwards to create clear openings when there should have been more space. Second half they camped in and it becomes more difficult to find space, but I think there should at least be some credit that we kept trying to play and didn’t just resort to long crosses into the box which we have been guilty of previously.
