Weir back in for the scum game

Rangers manager Walter Smith says David Weir will return to the side to face Celtic in midweek after the captain was left on the bench against St Johnstone.

"Davie had sickness prior to the game in Portugal, where he still played for an hour," Smith told BBC Scotland.

"I just felt it was better to leave him out today and we can get him back again on Wednesday."

Nikica Jelavic scored two and Sasa Papac and Kyle Lafferty also chipped in to seal a 4-0 win for Rangers at Ibrox.

The win, which came after Celtic were beaten 2-0 by Motherwell, means Rangers trail their Glasgow rivals at the top of the Scottish Premier League table by five points with two games in hand.

"We're pleased with the result," said Smith. "We played very well in the first half and we dictated play for most of it.

"We restricted St Johnstone's chances, with Allan McGregor only needing to make one good save.

"In the second half, St Johnstone made one or two little changes and they pushed us back for 25 minutes.

"But we managed to claw ourselves back into the game and the third goal effectively killed it.

"It meant we could go on and finish strongly and we're delighted with the result."

Slovakian winger Vladimir Weis was forced to leave the field in the first half of the match, but the Rangers manager said his ankle knock was not serious.

Rangers travel to Celtic Park on Wednesday for their Scottish Cup fifth-round replay.

Happiness is short lived then? Can Walter not see that he is holding our team back? Look at Bartley and Bougherra yesterday, they were pretty solid for their first game together, for the majority of the game they were basically in St Johnstone's half.

Walter catch a grip ffs!

It was good having weir out the team and playing a 4-4-2 while it lasted

Back to negative tactics on Wednesday huh walter even though Weir doesnt merit a start on his performances lately

If we play in more attacking manner we can win wether we have Weir at the back or not. Look what happened yesterday when Well attacked the scum, they wer fucked and couldn't get afford to commit as many players forward as they usually do.

I don't see the need for David Weir. Yesterday we played a higher defensive line, the defenders were comfortable on the ball, especially when bringing the ball out from the back, the distribution was better (even with a few shockers from Bougherra and Bartley). There was a bit more pace in there, which was obvious to see.

How often did we catch St. Johnstone offside yesterday, how little did they create...

Weir will come back in and we will sit deep, invite the bheggars onto us and Hooper, Samaras, Stokes, or whoever, will destroy him for pace. Bartley isn't the quickest, but he's got a hell of a lot more pace than Weir.

Why change a winning defence, why set out a team to accommodate a 40 year old who's legs have gone?

Setting up to accommodate Weir - why not let them worry about us!?

That's Walter thoughts on it, it wouldn't be my preferred set up. The back 4 that was used yesterday would be more than enough going to Parkhead on Wednesday.

I would be shocked if Walter didn't start Weir on Wednesday, cause that would be him making a statement that his captain is finished. Rightly or Wrongly he'll not hang Weir out to dry.
