ALLAN McGREGOR has reached an agreement in principle to sign a new contract with Rangers.

The Scotland goalkeeper still has two years of his deal left but Rangers are determined to secure him on a contract that will increase his wages and tie him to Ibrox until 2016. Herald Sport understands that McGregor has now reached a verbal agreement with Craig Whyte, the club’s owner, on a deal which will make him one of the highest-paid players at the club.

It is understood that both parties are willing to put the matter on the back burner while Ally McCoist, the manager, and Whyte deal with more pressing matters. Rangers want Steve Davis, who is now entering the final 12 months of his contract, to sign an extension and have made two offers of a new deal to Steven Whittaker, who is also a free agent next summer.

McGregor’s agent Dave Baldwin said: “We have spoken with Rangers and we have an understanding going forward that they will come back to Allan. Allan is very aware that the Rangers management have more pressing issues to deal with right now and there is no great rush on his part. So there is no definite timescale on this and both parties are comfortable with that. I am sure we will hear back from Rangers when appropriate.”

Despite reported interest in McGregor from the Barclays Premier League, there has been no inquiry from Aston Villa, where the former Rangers manager, Alex McLeish, has just been installed as successor to Gerard Houllier.

McCoist is also eager to make his first signing as Rangers manager, with Carlos Cuellar, the Villa centre-back, his primary target.

However, that honour could go to Neil Danns, the out-of-contract former Crystal Palace midfielder, who is hoping a concrete offer for his services will be tabled soon. Talks between the champions and Danns’ representatives continued yesterday, with the player’s camp hoping a successful conclusion can be reached this weekend.

McCoist has already had the possible Bosman signings of Israeli internationalist Tomer Hemed and Craig Conway, the former Dundee United midfielder, slip through his fingers and is determined to avoid a repeat.

Danns, however, is also being tracked by Championship sides Hull City, Leicester City and Leeds United and is impatient to have his future concluded given he is without a club.

With Danns thought to be enthusiastic about travelling to Glasgow for signing talks and a medical early next week, the fact that Rangers will return for pre-season training on Monday means a conclusion to the talks may be imminent.
