Listen guys, there was no reason for this kid to be loaned out by Wigan this year. He was genuinely coming to a good game for Wigan at the tail end of the season before, then Rosler decided to bring Caldwell in instead, shocking decision for a developing, comfortable centre half.

I like him.

Wigan Athletic have accepted an undisclosed offer from Rangers for defender Rob Kiernan, with Birmingham City withdrawing their bid.

BBC WM understands that the English Championship club had issues with the 24-year-old's medical.

The former Republic of Ireland Under-21 made 12 Blues appearances on loan in the final three months of the season.

Birmingham then agreed an undisclosed fee to sign Kiernan on a more permanent basis, on a two-year deal.

Now he could become former Brentford manager Mark Warburton's first signing since taking over at Ibrox.

Kiernan, who is holding talks with the Scottish Championship club, spent time on loan to the Bees while Warburton was at the club as a coach.

Warburton was also youth coach at Watford when Kiernan was converted previously from central midfield to centre-half.

Kiernan, born in Rickmansworth, started with his home town club before moving north to sign for Wigan in June 2011.

He played four times for Kilmarnock in the Scottish top flight on loan from Watford and also had spells with Yeovil Town, Bradford City and Wycombe Wanderers.

Warburton on Kiernan (2008, Milk Cup):

"Rob Kiernan is naturally a midfielder but was playing at centre half in a physical game and he did very well, he captained the side and he'll be fighting for his pro contract this year.

"I must say for us that Rob Kiernan was again outstanding, as he has been all tournament. His distribution was excellent and he was magnificent in leading the team as one of the senior players.

MW (2012):

Mark Warburton, Brentford FC Sporting Director, was at Watford when Rob was in The Hornets Football Academy.

He said: "Rob is a product of the Watford Academy, where he spent 10 years before moving on to pastures new.

He spent a week with Brentford during the summer of 2011, joining in with pre-season training, and whilst we were very eager to sign him, he was snapped up by Wigan.

Rob has developed well under the guidance of Roberto Martinez and is very highly thought of at the club.

Rob is a talented footballing central defender who we are delighted to welcome to Griffin Park, albeit on a short term basis."
