My first thought when players of that era are mentioned is that they used to be on my wee collection of footballers cards at that time, many of which are still used by older posters on here as avatars.

Maybe not among our greatest perhaps, but always put in a honest professional performance in what was a very good team at the time. An integral part of our treble winning team back then, a solid player who helped the likes of Russell and Cooper to shine.

R.I.P. Johnny.

From the book Rangers Treble Kings

Johnny Hamilton : In the right place at the right time

Midfielder Johnny Hamilton played fewer than 80 matches for Rangers yet he still won three medals, including a League Championship one.Freed by Hibs at the end of season 1972-73 ,he seemed an unlikely candidate for success at Jock Wallace's Ibrox and initially this did not look like changing. In his first two seasons he only managed to play in nine competitive games but then in in the Treble winning season 1975-76 things took off.

In that season at the end of November he finally got his chance as a playmaker in the side when he was given the number eight shirt and he never looked back.By the end of the season he had a League Championship medal and a Scottish cup medal in his possession. A native Glaswegian who like previous Rangers stars had played for Benburb he was immensely proud of his achievement

Hamilton was by no means a pacy player but with his fine sense of positioning and accurate passing skills ,he fitted into the Rangers midfield perfectly sitting between the perpetual motion of Alex MacDonald and the precision passing of Tommy Mclean . Of those three midfield men he was the least likely to score but he was just as likely to create for others.

In the barren season of 1976-77,he kept his place in the side and even played in the losing team against Celtic in the Scottish cup final . But that was effectively the end of his regular first team appearances at Ibrox. The irony was the young man who took over his role in the side ,Bobby Russell had been coached by Hamilton as a youngster while playing for the famous Glasgow amateur side Possil YM. Russell was a classier version of his mentor and that season was irreplaceable.

During the second treble winning season of 1977-78 ,Hamilton did not get into the first team until March. This was when he played in a Scottish cup quarter final at Ibrox against Kilmarnock ,though he did not score in the 4-1 win. A week later he completed his set of domestic titles when he picked up a League cup winners medal after helping Rangers beat Celtic 2-1 in the final. It must have been something of a record as it was the only League cup game he had played all season.

A few days later he was given a free transfer .After his short but profitable time at Ibrox ,he had spells with Millwall and finally St Johnstone before retiring.

Footballers salaries then were nothing like the astronomical sums of today and so he ended up working for a while on the oil rigs before getting a job in a supermarket distribution depot near his home in Uddingston. The £4,000 bonus for being part of the Treble winning side was not a sum a man could retire on - even in those days.

Johnny Hamilton played 77 times for Rangers between 1973 and 1978 and scored 8 goals. He won 1 League title,1 Scottish cup and 1 League cup. What would most fans give for such a brief but spectacular career at Ibrox?

I was sure his nickname was something to do with the fact he actually smoked a lot, and sure enough just found out that in Dave Leggat's "Jock Wallace" book Colin Jackson quotes that Johnny Hamilton was smoking forty fags a day !!

Colin also mentions that Johnny really suffered under Wallace's training, but although he could not run he could stick the ball about to the right place. :)
