He almost, and may still prove to he the case, relegated clyde out the football league with one of the highest budgets.

I'm also pretty sure he would have an advantage over almost every team in the league due to his contacts in the game.

He would be a terrible coach never mind manager.

Clyde with a high budget???? Well that cheered me up.

well said, a self serving self centred spoiled brat. Imagine the player that led the revolt against double training sessions under PLG having to take a squad for eh double training sessions. Also shows his arrogance and lack of intelligence to say that, you may think it but you keep it to yourself

But he didnt do anything wrong during the le guen era, he just didnt like gettin beat!

He's a self centred, arrogant aresehole of a guy and i'm delighted he isn't involved in coaching our players in any shape or form.

Ive no doubt he wants to manage Rangers one day, he doesn shut up about it, but its all about personal gains with Baz. If he did well all we'd get was how difficult a decision its been to leave the club he loves for some mid table premiership pish.

I could get torn in about some of what his ghostwriter said in that article but I've already slated him and now as the OP says, the bullet was dodged. I'll just mention that he did use the newspaper column in an attempt to further his chances with the Record ghostwriter passing off three pseudo applications as BF columns.

He's very big on using the media, always has been, always will be....and it's always been about 'Barry Ferguson interests', nothing to do with Rangers.

I'll just say that if Ferguson wants to manage Rangers, I think he'll have to hugely improve on his dismal time at Clyde near the bottom of Scottish senior football......but I doubt there will be a queue of clubs forming at his door offering him that opportunity.....and that would tell a story.

Rangers boss Pedro Caixinha asked me where I saw myself in five years time ... I told him I wanted his job

Former Ibrox skipper Barry Ferguson reveals he'll never know if he ruined his chances of a dream return to Ibrox as No3 to the Portuguese gaffer.

I may have not have gone for many job interviews in my life but even I knew this was the moment my chances of a role on Pedro Caixinha’s coaching staff might have hit a bit of a buffer.

But I’ll tell you this much, if I was back in that office this morning and asked again where I saw myself in five years, I would say the exact same thing.

Of course I want to be the manager of Rangers one day. I would have been lying to the man’s face if I said any different.

Look, I don’t know if that had anything to do with his final decision and I must say also I’m delighted for my old team-mate Jonatan Johansson who was the successful candidate. He was the right man for the job for the simple reason he obviously ticked all the boxes that Pedro needed filled.

But I would like to take this opportunity to make clear that if I had been selected for his staff, I’d have done everything in my power to help Pedro be as successful as possible.

There is no way I would’ve gone into a job like that looking to stab him in the back.

I want to get that off my chest because, over the last few weeks, I’ve seen a lot of people bringing up what went on all those years ago when Paul le Guen was the manager.

To this day I’m still accused of undermining the guy.

That’s absolute b******s and I’m sick to the back teeth of hearing it.

I was working under a manager who accepted losing matches. If it’s a crime that I wasn't capable of accepting that then, yes, I’m guilty.

But I don’t see it as a crime. I never will.

I was simply brought up on the tradition of winning football games with Rangers and I feel passionately about it.

The good news is, after meeting the guy in person last month, I think Pedro feels exactly the same way.

It has been a tricky few weeks for me because everyone knew I was part of the interview process, including the guys in this newspaper. But I didn’t want to write about it out of respect to the club. I’m grateful to the Daily Record for respecting my position
because, as a columnist, they could have put pressure on me to spill the beans.

But there was an understanding that I would not mention anything about it until after the position had been filled. Now that JJ has got the job I’d just like to congratulate him and wish him all the best.

From my point of view, of course I would have loved to get back in there and help Pedro try to turn things around.

Like anyone else from any walk of life, if you go for an interview and aren’t successful then you are disappointed. But I’m not going to sit in a corner and start crying about it.

I’m not one for feeling sorry for myself.

Yes, I would have welcomed the chance to help Pedro and the players but I completely respect his decision to give it to Jonatan. There’s certainly no ill feeling on my part.

All that matters as far as I and the rest of the fans are concerned is that Rangers get back to winning trophies.

I was excited about the chance to help them do that.

When Stewart Robertson called and asked me if I would go in for a chat with the manager I was obviously delighted to do so. Let’s face it, everyone knows how I feel about the club and how honoured I would be to go back there in any capacity one day.

So, yes, I don’t mind admitting my stomach was churning when I drove back through the gates of Murray Park to go and meet with the manager at the training complex.

We spent an hour and 40 minutes talking about his philosophies on football and the way he wants to do things. He also asked me about myself and my career but he already knew most of the answers as he had done his homework and was very well prepared.

It was an enjoyable chat.

But it’s fair to say that when I was making way home I wasn’t sure that I was going to be his kind of guy. My gut feeling was that I was not what he was looking for.

There was a point when he asked me about my hopes and ambitions for the future and I looked him in the eye and told him the truth. One day I hope to be the manager of Rangers. There’s no point lying about it, that’s my ultimate aim.

If I was going to work with Pedro then I didn’t see the point in starting off on the wrong foot or in being dishonest. It was important that he knew he was dealing with someone who would give him the truth.

Did that cost me my chance of getting the job? I’ll probably never know the answer.

But the truth is, for whatever reason, I left the meeting feeling pretty sure that I wasn’t his cup of tea.

That’s absolutely fine. It’s the manager’s prerogative to pick the people he thinks are best suited to the positions he needs to fill – he certainly doesn’t owe me anything.

And I’m actually really delighted for JJ because he’s an old team-mate of mine and one of the nicest guys you could ever hope to meet. He’s also very well respected for his work as a coach and it’s great to see someone I used to play with get an opportunity like this.

As for me? I’ve not given up on my own dreams and aspirations. Not a chance.

But I am a firm believer in fate and in the saying, ‘What’s for you will not go by you’.

I’ve been a Rangers fan since I was old enough to walk and talk. I’d be lying if I said I don’t hope to return there one day and my ultimate ambition is to one day get the honour of managing the club I played for and captained.

I don’t know if that’ll happen but I do know I’m going to do everything in my power to be worthy of the position one day.

I agree with this. The way he behaved during PLG's tenure will never forgotten by me. Deliberately playing in front of defence, despite being told to play further up the park, and making link play impossible. PLG should have left on account of his own management decisions, but instead it was owing to players not carrying out his instructions.

I'd hate to see him coaching here at any level.

I was brought up on the tradition of winning football games tells you all you need to know about Barry Ferguson. One of our greatest midfield players ever to grace Ibrox.

He told Pedro the truth so I don't see how this is a bullet dodged, Barry was being honest about his future and Pedro didn't think he would fit, move on ffs.

Fannies saying 'fuck him' and 'Pedro seen through him' shut the fuck up, apprently as soon as you leave Rangers you're now a wanker. If Barry proves over the years he's a good manager and the situations right etc I'd love to have him if he was right for the job. Welcome home anytime, captain. Fuck le guen anol.

Whoring his job interview to DR. Can't STFU.  Would have been really surprised and disappointed if he had impressed Pedro more than JJ.

Barry had some good years with us. I can't be bothered listening to him though.

An outstanding midfielder that came through the system when there was money being thrown at signings deserves a lot of credit. But this has very little current relevance given that his boots are hung-up.

Failed Clyde manager, a Daily Record column, BBC Scotland punditry and a history of using media for his own interests isn't the type of CV the club should consider.

Kudos to Pedro for dodging bullet but pelters for the board for shortlisting him in the first place.

absolutely nothing wrong (or unexpected) with what he said imo - not the right fit for the job.

I honestly don't see him as ever being in a position to manage us, he doesn't seem to want to do his time before stepping into a management role, he just needs to get his head down and do the time, build up his experience under someone before even thinking he can be rangers manager in 5 years.
