CELTIC BECOME 'CHAMPIONS OF Britain' IN HONOUR OF THE QUEEN

The Coronation Cup was a one-off competition held in 1953 to celebrate the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, involving four English teams (Arsenal, Manchester United, Newcastle and Tottenham) and four Scottish clubs (Celtic, Rangers, Aberdeen and Hibernian). The competition was taken seriously in those pre-European Cup days, giving clubs the chance to compete against teams from another country and an opportunity to claim the unofficial title of British champions. All four teams from England were drawn against the four Scottish teams, with Celtic and Hibernian progressing along with Manchester United and Newcastle. Having knocked out Arsenal, Celtic were drawn against Manchester United and beat them 2-1 to set up a final with Hibernian, which they won 2-0.
