Smith was at the Emirates Stadium last night on a scouting mission at the Carling Cup semi-final between Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur

That says to me the Hutton deal aint dead <_<

Larsen would be a good signing and he's still young at 26 we should try and bring back lovenkrands aswell (tu)

totally agree (tu)

Being Swedish, I read about Larsen in the paper today as well. He used to play in the team that won most league titles in the last decade, he's about as much a talent you could get domestically over here. Not a super-talent, though.

And our papers said he wants about £80k a month.

I think he would be a very very good signing would fit in well if Smith decided to keep playing 4-5-1.

And in recent weeks we have been good playing that way with Hemdani, Thommo and Fergie in the middle.

With 2 quick attacking wide men and a lone striker.

He is a class act though and at <2m would be a bargain!!

Pretty much just what's been mentioned already,

Rangers could restore the Danish connection to Ibrox if they pursue their interest in Soren Larsen, the Schalke 04 striker. Walter Smith has been offered the Denmark forward, valued at £1.4 million, and if the player came, he would be following in the footsteps of several compatriots.

The player’s agent, Ivan Marko Benes – who is also the agent for Peter Lovenkrands, the former Rangers favourite – is believed to have held talks with Martin Bain, the Ibrox chief executive, to discuss a possible move.

Lovenkrands spent six years at Ibrox before moving in 2006 to the German club. Danish players have been coming to Ibrox since the 1960s, when Kai Johansen and Erik Sorensen were stars. Jan Bartram played in the late 1980s and Erik Bo Andersen, the striker, was at Rangers between 1996 and 1998.

At 6ft 4in, Larsen would seem like an ideal replacement for Daniel Cousin. The French striker has stated his determination to win a move to the Barclays Premier League, although Rangers say there have been no approaches.

Bain was presented with a DVD of Larsen’s scoring exploits, and it has been passed on Smith. Larsen has scored 17 goals in 55 starts for the Bundesliga side, often linking up with Lovenkrands. Larsen would cost around £1 million-a-year in wages, but his physical style could turn out to be perfect for the demands of Scottish football.

Eintracht Frankfurt, Wolfsburg and FC Copenhagen have already inquired about the 26-year-old, who was linked with Celtic in August 2006, but Larsen has no intention of returning home to Denmark.

Smith could also make a move for Steve Banks, the Heart of Midlothian goalkeeper, after agreeing to allow Roy Carroll, the former Manchester United goalkeeper, to join Derby County. Reports claims that Rangers are prepared to offer £50,000 for Banks, who has been recommended by Jim Stewart, the goalkeeping coach, who worked with the Englishman at Tynecastle.

The experienced Carroll has been frustrated at playing the role of understudy to Allan McGregor since he arrived from West Ham United last summer. The chance to move back to the top-flight in England as a first-choice was impossible for the Northern Ireland goalkeeper to resist.

“Roy has been up in Glasgow on his own and wants to be closer to his family,†Francis Martin, his agent, said. “It was a boyhood dream of his to play for Rangers, the team he grew up supporting, and it’s a real pity things haven’t really worked out.â€

Paul Jewell, the Derby manager, was hoping to sign Carroll this week, but Smith will only sanction the deal if he secures a replacement. “The chairman has spoken to his agent and Walter and, hopefully, we can get that one over the line today,†Jewell said. “Roy is a top-class goalkeeper.â€

Banks has spent most of his time at Tynecastle as No 2 to Craig Gordon. The Scotland goalkeeper’s move to Sunderland ought to have opened up the door to the 35-year-old Englishman being given the top role but he has had to rotate with Eduardo Kurskis and Anthony Basso.

if somehow we managed to get £3M for cousin, then spend half that on larsen, thats us up 1.5M that can go elsewhere on the team and with a player who could probably (hopefully) do as good a job as cousin, or better.

Larsen looks to be injured more than JCD, average of 12 games a season including sub roles it would seem.

on that bombshell, we'll have a bid in within the hour....

I wouldn't look at his overall record because he hasn't always been a first pick at clubs so wouldn't have played ever game even if he was fit.

  • 2 weeks later...
Schalke coach Mirko Slomka has called on strikers Soren Larsen and Peter Lovenkrands to make "significant improvements" if they are to play a more prominent role for the club in the second half of the season.

Larsen has dropped to fifth in the club's striking pecking order while Lovenkrands has found his first-team chances limited, but both were on target in a 3-1 friendly win over Freiburg on Tuesday.

With star striker Kevin Kuranyi laid low by a lung infection, Slomka is now ready to let the Danish pair challenge Gerald Asamoah and Halil Altintop for the starting berths in attack as the Royal Blues bid to challenge on three fronts between now and May.

"Both have already shown what they are capable of," Slomka said after watching Larsen and Lovenkrands' goalscoring displays.

"I expect them both to make significant improvements."

Larsen has been linked with a move to Lovenkrands' former club Rangers, but Slomka is keen to keep his current squad intact as they chase Bundesliga, Champions League and German Cup glory.

"The players all know that we are working for titles in May, in the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and the Champions League," Slomka added to the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper.

"[A large squad] is good and it can only help the team.

"In the first half of the season, we had numerous injuries and I am happy to have more options in my team to allow us to reach the targets we have set."
