After the McInnes shambles the board realised they knew nothing about football matters and handed the whole thing over to Allen.
Thats why we are where we are today. Went to the board and recommended Gerrard. King met Gerrard and was delighted to rubber stamp the appointment.
Allen handles all scouting, contracts and negotiations leaving the coaching staff to concentrate on what they do best. It is the model of choice at all top clubs which is why timmy does not follow it.

I think a lot of people understandably are sceptical of the director of football role as it can potentially undermine the manager and cause conflict and division. However the huge benefit of having one has meant that even before Gerrard came in we had already done the groundwork on a number of players and it seemed it was just a case of Gerrard giving the acquisition of certain players the nod. Without Allen being here Gerrard, as good as he may be, he would have been so far behind in the recruitment process and we may have missed out on some players. Therefore even if the manager changes having Allen here keeps that consistency and we avoid missing out on certain targets.
Allen has completely revamped our scouting process and was also instrumental in bringing in Gerrard. On paper he seems to be doing a really good job and IMO deserves credit especially as many have been wary and critical of his appointment. In fairness to him the timing of his appointment meant he was always going to struggle to make an immediate impact as he was appointed after Pedro when it should have been the other way round. Pedro then seemed to have full reign of who came in without any influence from Allen. Effectively he was working with one hand tied behind his back.
Now he fully has his feet under the table I think we seem to be seeing the benefits a decent director of football can bring. Without him I don't think we would have been as prepared in our recruitment process and ready for our European run. We may have lost out to guys like Arfield, Katic, McGregor etc although there is an element of guesswork on my part. However if you're not aware of free transfers like Arfield early you'll lose them to other teams as they'll not be short of options.
So far nothing has been achieved. It will depend on where we are at the end of the season but I think certainly we look far more capable this season and understandably we're all a tad optimistic. We've had a rough few years and it's good to have a few glimpses of the real Rangers being back. As soon as one game is finished I just can't wait for the next.

This whole thread is one of the best things to have happened over the last 6 or so years.  We have endured such a lot since the Killie 5 - 1 game.   After that we all know the problems, trials, tribulations, etc.  Times which put many of us to the test.  Times where it would have been easier to walk away.  Times when it may have looked as if we could never get back to our rightful position.  Times when almost every person in authority in Scottish football seemed to try to kill our Club.  We all struggled through and then this thread began and if some of the content doesn't make the hairs on the back of your head stand up, if it doesn't bring a lump to your throat, if it doesn't bring a tear to your eye, if it doesn't make your chest broader and your heart beat faster, then you are no Rangers fan.

The guys that have seen this need to forward their accounts to The club and demand that they assist. First and foremost safety is at stake. Secondly reputation. It's important to the future safety of others that they badger the club. We need the club to take on some kind of role like SIMA suggested.

What a difference it is having proper, intelligent football people in charge. 100% what we’ve missed for 6 years.

I don't think there's much point making retrospective arguments about the past, he was a Rangers hero tonight regardless and that's what matters right now

Us and cellic getting into the group stages would be a start. Then we look to build on that.
But honestly, if its a choice between watching them getting fucked out of Europe or the coefficient - I'll take watching them getting fucked out of Europe every time. I dont recall anybody in Scotland being bothered with the coefficient when they voted us out, though I do remember us getting the blame in the press BECAUSE we couldn't qualify for Europe - and therefore the coefficient was somehow our fault
    Sorry  @gogzy

We don’t know the ins and outs of Rodgers and lawwel relationship but if it’s a strong one then you’d expect 3-4 good signings between now and September.
weve been in that situation before under smith. Think we lost to celtic then aek then Falkirk in a week and still we romped it in the league.  Let’s not get too ahead of ourselves eh?

Let's get through Thursday and the first game against them before we get too excited. It's still far too early for all this.

For all the younger bears:  don't you just love being in the company of older bears at the game, in the pub/club/lodge?  The stories, the patter, the arguments and discussions.  I always did as a younger man - Colin Stein couldn't lace Jimmy Millar's boots or Ralph Brand's either;  Bobby Brown was a much better goalie than Billy Ritchie;  Bobby Collins was good enough to play for us; how good was Don Kichenbrand?  These are some of the issues that were raised and argued about in my day.  And I loved it all, hearing the old-timers have their say.
Nostalgia ain't what it used to be loyal.

There speaks a man who sat in a dressing room at half time in the biggest game of his career 3 goals down and said, do you know what, we can do this, we must never surrender, lads lets go

I said a while a go that he's the type of player you don't really notice until he makes a mistake.  He quietly goes about gluing the team together and picking up the pieces in the midfield.  Rarely does the spectacular thing but does the engine work in midfield that allows the flare and positive players to do their stuff.  I'm not saying  that based on last night, I was saying that before injury wrecked last season.  He was starting to grow into the jersey and looked as if he was starting to believe he could actually be a Ranger.  Unfortunately, injury wrecked the progress, but it looks like he's now starting to pick up and move on.
If fans can really see what he brings to the team (the oil that keeps the engine running smoothly), rather than look for a flashy, dynamic impact they'll start to see an essential part of a team doing his job well.  But it has to be sustained...can he do that?
