As far as Tav goes, he’s been a fantastic player for us and has repaid his fee about ten times over but he’s playing like a player who’s played a lot of football over the past decade and is starting to lose a yard of sharpness. However, I wouldn’t be entirely surprised if Tav ended up being one of our better players over the course of the season because he’s got form for being a slow starter during seasons and getting better as the campaign goes on.
I’ve always maintained that this season should have been the season where we identified and signed his long term replacement and we worked towards transitioning from Tav being the first choice right back to whoever we signed becoming the first choice right back, but I also get that we’ve had to do a massive overhaul of the squad to do that could be something for the next window or maybe even next Summer’s window.

And with those words still ringing in his ears, he’s now told Peter Bosz’s Eredivisie outfit that Rangers are ready to repeat that famous victory of 12 months ago and clinch a £20million golden group-stage ticket. The Ibrox shot-stopper said: “People like to write Rangers off. The great Mr Struth said that himself.

“People write us off, they forget we’re Rangers. If people want to write us off, if they want to call them favourites, so be it.

“But we’re looking forward to the tie. We walk past [the Struth quote] every day at the training ground, we walk past it at the stadium.

“I’ve looked into it. Of course, when I signed I looked into the history but this is a quote we walk past every day. The manager showed it to us again on Tuesday.

“It’s something people expect of us but people also like to write us off. So do that if you will. We’ve got to go there and do the right job. We’ve put ourselves in a good position to do so. It could have been a little bit better, it could have been worse. But we go there off a confident performance.”

Butland admits he can already feel the weight of history dragging down on his shoulders every time he pulls on a Gers jersey. But it’s a burden he’s more than happy to bear as he seeks to write his own name into the club’s storied annals.

“You can’t get away from it here,” he said. “No matter where you walk in the building, at the training ground, there are pictures of cup final wins, league wins, European nights. The trophy room.

He is a better player when not under pressure, yet is probably the main driving force when we go behind in key games like last year with his multiple goals on the old firm under massive pressure.

Such a lazy take IMO considering that last season our support literally hounded out a manager who led us to a major European final and won a trophy a mere six months earlier and there’s already a decent section of our support who want the guy who replaced him out the door already.
