Rangers last night made their big move to keep Kris Boyd at Ibrox - by promising to make him one of their best-paid players.

Record Sport understands Boyd's representative, Mark Donaghy, was at Murray Park yesterday to meet chief executive Martin Bain who has been battling with bankers to find more money for the striker.

Bain pushed the boat out by offering Boyd the maximum terms available and it's believed Scotland's top scorer would stand to pocket an extra £8000 a week if he agrees to put pen to paper on the new deal.

The whopping increase would take Boyd on to £18,000 a week basic and into the top bracket of earners at a club that has been crippled by financial crisis.

But it still might not be enough to match the kind of wages on offer down south from the likes of Middlesbrough and Alex McLeish's Birmingham.

Boro manager Gordon Strachan has already made his personal pitch to Donaghy and Mc L e i s h has asked Rangers to be informed of any January bids for the player he took to Ibrox from Kilmarnock four years ago.

Rangers, though, are determined to do all they can to tempt Boyd into staying .

Bain has been working hard behind the scenes to convince the money men they should dig deep to keep the player at the club while manager Walter Smith tries to win a second successive SPL title and a £10million ticket into the Champions League.

Boyd's goals could prove crucial to Smith's chances of fighting off a Celtic revival in the second half of the season and the manager has made it clear he wants his main striker to be offered a lucrative deal that reflects his importance to the team.

The manager would also be reluctant to lose playmaker Pedro Mendes who is wanted by Sporting LisbonPersonal Smith has already voiced his concern about years of cost-cutting that have taken the investment in his first-team squad to base level.

He has warned that any further reductions will make it impossible for his club to stay at the top of the Scottish game.

However, while Smith is determined not to give an inch in his struggle against the financial cutbacks, he is also mindful of personal circumstances and aware that, at 31, Portuguese international Mendes might be looking for one last bumper pay day.

Rangers are not in a position to match any deal that is put in front of their highest-paid player and Smith would find i t difficult to stand in his way should Mendes express a desire to cash in on the security of a long-term contract in his homeland.

Just saw that on Sky Sports News. If the reports are true, then he will be getting a pretty impressive pay rise; between £18k - £20k a week. Don't know if it will be as much as that, but the main things is that he signs a new deal, and stay with Rangers, along with keeping his form up!

I don't think there's any doubt that this is the end of Mendes' Gers career!

Depends if Sportin CP can afford his wages

If Mendes is willing to take a pay cut then I'd imagine he's away.

Great news about Boyd though. He has put in the effort over the past few months to get himself in shape and improve his all round game. Now he just has to continue with that and keep improving!

I hope he accepts, ASAP!

Just as an aside about Pedro, why can't we offer him reduced wages? He seems happy enough to stay and was only willing to move to aid the clubs financial troubles. Could we not offer him reduced terms? I accept, of course, that he will be drawn to Sporting in his homeland.
