Ah well.

Chief executive Charles Green believes Rangers will be involved in the formation of a new European league.

Green's consortium relaunched the Ibrox club after the former incarnation could not be saved from liquidation.

"I'm convinced it will happen because otherwise where will the revenues for the top come from”

Charles Green on a European league

Rangers currently play in Scottish Football League Division Three.

"There will be a European league because big teams can't keep subsidising small teams for the next 10 years because they will go stale," said Green.

"Arsenal don't want to play Southampton or Swansea, but ask them if they want to play Celtic or Rangers. It's what the fans want to see.

"Fans across the world want to see Manchester United play Barcelona, not just once every few years but every season.

"If there are two divisions of 18 clubs, how could Rangers not be a part of that?

"I'm convinced it will happen because otherwise where will the revenues for the top come from?

"These days Arsenal are struggling to sell out their game against West Ham."

Last month, BBC Scotland revealed Scottish clubs, including Rangers, were to discuss the possibility of being part of a new European regional league set-up.

Uefa is believed to be becoming increasingly concerned by the polarisation across the game between the top clubs and top leagues and is open to change.

And Green added: "How can Manchester United's revenues be £320m and Aston Villa, who are completely useless, get £250m?

"What Manchester United put into world football is massive, but what they take out of it is a joke and they won't put up with that for much longer."

My dad told me when I was very young that Rangers would be in a european league one day and that's as far as it goes nearly 20 years later!

This might happen, one day.

Uefa have already had a meeting with countries willing to set up a Balkan regional league, so far all ex-yugoslavian countries, Hungary and Bulgaria.

Edit/ No way that Aston Villa got a £250m revenue

Haha another gem from Charles.

The story about the Balkan league is hugely significant. The future for us is unlikely to be England and more likely a league with say Scandinavian and dutch clubs. A cross border domestic set up saved professional rugby in Scotland and it will ultimately do the same for football.

As a fan I would probably buy shares regardless. However from an investment point of view such a scenario is where the return lies.a properly run Rangers back in the spl would be worth £40 to £50 mil. In a new league with improved tv revenue?

In the past people were sceptical of such a set up. Is playing copenhagen or PSV that much more exciting than Aberdeen or hearts? It lacks rivalry. Then again rangers fans are unique in wanting to watch their team but desperately looking for an alternative to the existing top league. As we have shown we watch Rangers regardless of the opponents.

If anyone should be pushing this it is green. It is for the good of the club and the good of his investment.

IMO, it wont be up to Uefa/Fifa or whoever who will make the changes it'll be the TV companies, especially Sky who will tell them what they want. If Sky wanted Rangers in the Premiership tomorrow they could do it. (1.5 billion goes a long way in power)

I read an article many moons ago that the only profit game they could make on pay-for-view was the Old Firm game, so when the premiership goes/starts to go stale they will look at other avenues and this would be one of them as the traveling support would be encouraged to watch at home due to lack of access.

Though the Gers fans living overseas in Europe would love it. :21:

Doesn't matter who we play. Football is a sport and sports like tennis and golf are not hampered by nations. It is only hampered by the bodies that set the game up at varying times in different parts of the world.

We could have a first team in a European league and a reserve team in the Scottish league to play the smaller clubs like Aberdeen, celtic and the likes who are left behind to apease folk who like playing them.

Inverness CT and Ross County when they left their 'national' league to join a bigger league wanted to play a reserve team in the Highland League.

Will it happen? I doubt it. The Champions League would have to go... or incorporate the idea.

A bit more about the proposed "Balkan league"

The former states of Yugoslavia are considering forming a regional Balkan League, starting in 2015, with UEFA believed to be prepared to grant approval to the cross-border competition.

According to a report in Croatia's Globus newspaper, the topic was raised at a meeting organised by European football's governing body, and is being seriously considered by eight countries.

The league would involve teams from Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Slovenia, Macedonia and Montenegro, along with Hungary and Bulgaria. Michel Platini, the UEFA president, has expressed his support for cross-border competitions, even though the governing body has previously held reservations.

The meeting discussing the proposed Balkan League was held last month, and chaired by the deputy secretary-general, Theodore Theodoridis, and, if the competition was to be established, it would set a precedent.

The Old Firm were once involved in discussion about forming an Atlantic league with teams from the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Portugal and Belgium. UEFA were against the proposal at the time, but that was 10 years ago and attitudes have changed. UEFA recently set a precedent by agreeing to clubs competing in a cross-border women's football league in Belgium and the Netherlands being allowed to contest European tournaments. That development would allow for clubs in a Balkan or Atlantic League being granted access to the Champions League.

lol Aston Villa are useless..... Bang on Charlie!

Makes a lot of sense -- as per usual. 00000042.gif

These wanks down south that think sides like sides like Stoke and Sunderland are bigger than The Rangers -- because of the EPL dosh -- are insane. Like Charlie says... ThInk ManURE fans look forward to battling it out with these 2? Doubt it. When there are mush tastier matches that are possible.

Fully behind this European league... Of course, travelling would be a wee bit of an issue? But something has to happen. 00000042.gif
