By no standards was he a socialist. That accusation is normally made by people that want to dissociate him with the right and associate him with the left for whatever purpose. Of course socialists don't want it, largely because it's a lie that some like to push in some kind of effort to discredit socialists.

He may have called himself it once, but he more often ridiculed it, and in practice did not show himself to be one. In fact as leader, he purged socialists, or people he considered sounded too socialist, from the party. Murdered them. Got rid of socialist sentiment.

It was a different time, socialism meant a different thing back then, he called himself a socialist.
