Rangers issue ‘hands off’ warning to FA over Mark Warburton as they shoot down England U-21s link

A senior Ibrox source has confirmed that they will fight tooth and nail to stop the Gers gaffer being lured back down south

RANGERS have issued a “hands off” warning to the FA after Mark Warburton emerged as a surprise contender for the England Under-21s job.

The Gers gaffer has many admirers at St George’s Park thanks to his track record of nurturing and developing young players.

But he has NOT applied for the role — and has no intention of doing so before Friday’s deadline.

If the FA are serious about their pursuit of the 53-year-old, it would fall on them to seek permission to speak to the Ibrox boss before they begin the interviewing process on January 13.

As of tonight, no such approach had been made.

And a senior Ibrox source also confirmed that Rangers would fight tooth and nail to keep Warbs, who has turned things around following a slow start to the season.

Gers are up to second place in the Premiership, following consecutive wins against Aberdeen, Hearts and Hamilton.

His continued commitment to playing attractive football means many influential Wembley figures want him to succeed Gareth Southgate, who landed the senior job for keeps last month.

But Gers are confident Warburton would reject any advances given he is just 18 months into an initial three-year project at Ibrox.

Warbs signed an improved contract in the summer having led Gers back to the top flight in his first season in charge.

An overhaul of the playing staff followed and it has taken longer than expected for his new signings to gel.

But in recent weeks, with Warburton adapting his style and formation, Rangers have played some impressive stuff.

The Ibrox boss was linked with a string of moves last season and it is anticipated he will one day return to manage at the top level in England.

But he is in no rush to head back south just yet, with Rangers confident of keeping their man.

Other names in the frame include current Under-20s chief Aidy Boothroyd, who stood in for Southgate for the Under-21s’ final two Euro 2017 qualifiers.

The former Watford boss, who as a player had a brief spell with Hearts, led England’s kids to a wins over Kazakhstan and Bosnia and Herzegovina and is expected to apply.

Paul Clement, currently No2 to Carlo Ancelotti at Bayern Munich, and ex-Valencia coach Phil Neville are also potential candidates.

But the FA’s desire to appoint an English boss with a proven ability for spotting and developing young talent has prompted many senior figures inside Wembley’s corridors of powers to put former City trader Warbs at the top of their target list.

So the Sun starts the 'England want Warburton' story then follow up with a 'hands-off' warning.  Tabloid journalism at its finest.  Not sure if this is shit-stirring over the holidays with the OF game looming or just the normal crap we expect from the Sun.

I just find it funny how Warburton gets linked with all these jobs (players too) meanwhile at torbett towers Rodgers isn't getting linked with anything.

Almost like they're trying to cause some discord

Deja vu, this time last year before a crucial game against Hibs. Tabloid mischief making again when we start to look like we can start stringing a run together. I'm not bothered, if he wants to go then I'm sure MW would come out and say it clearly. The lack of comment from him , shows the contempt he is treating this latest desperate paper tactic.

If MW wanted to go that's fine, he would not be committed to us and would be better of away.  As it stands though he is committed to us and is starting to get a flow about the team recently which is great.

Either way the club will continue to recover from the last years and get back to where we belong soon enough.

No they pinched a story from the London Times today and are sensationalising as usual on the back of the papers.

Its what they do. Don't know how after years people don't realise this.

We're big news it sells papers whatever the story.

I personally believe there's no agenda just the papers create stories for discussion and know fans will talk about it and go on their website

Tabloid pish as per.

The only scenario in which MW would go to manage the England U21 side is if he was promised that he would be first team manager in a few years and since that's never going to happen then we can assume that the story is nothing more than my first sentence.

Don't see it? They broke the story saying they wanted him yesterday and followed it up today saying we've said hands off.
