Wes - "We'll be fitter"

WES FODERINGHAM believes Rangers will be fitter than last year as they gear up for their return to action in the Spanish sunshine.

Foderingham, alongside fellow goalkeepers Allan McGregor, Jak Alnwick and youngster Robby McCrorie have been working tirelessly under coach Colin Stewart, although the quartet have also been joining in a lot of the main fitness work with the remainder of the squad.

Speaking exclusively to RangersTV, Foderingham explained: “It has been very hard, and you see a lot of the boys have been putting pictures on social media with the sweat dripping off their foreheads.

“We have been doing a lot of running to give us that base fitness as that was probably a criticism of us last season us not being fit enough.

“I don’t think that will be a problem this year. To be fair, I don’t think we have enough time off to now for your fitness levels to drop significantly.

“So pre-season is as hard as you want to make it – as long as you keep yourself ticking over in the short time you have off, then it’s not too hard.

“We have joined in with some of the running which has been a little bit different, although we have fared quite well.

“We have joined in some of the small-sided possession games which is good to get the feet going, and it is nice to get a mix of the goalkeeping and outfield stuff.”

Foderingham worked alongside Stewart for the bulk of last season prior to him being confirmed as the club’s new goalkeeping coach on a permanent basis ahead of the new campaign.

The English stopper also has experience of working with Stewart senior at Ibrox in recent years, and reckons there are aspects the duo perform in a like-minded fashion.

Foderingham joked: “He [Jim] has just passed down the goalkeeping bible I think! There are similarities in the drills, but they are two different coaches at the end of the day.

“There is only so much you can do with goalkeeping variations, but Colin has come in and added-in a fitness element as well, which we have seen in pre-season.”

Foderingham missed the latter part of last season with injury, but having recovered, is raring to go once again.

He added: “I struggled with a shoulder injury last season, and I just needed a period of time for it to settle down and then see a specialist.

“I am feeling a lot better now but it is probably something I am going to have to manage throughout the season, but everything is looking good at the minute.”

See the bit I have highlighted. If this has only started this season then what the fuck were the GK's doing at training?

It certainly wasn't dealing with shots from distance

Technically, that is wrong, mate!  6 yards is actually a "distance". I've looked through some training sessions from last season where Murty was hitting balls on the angle from the 18 yard box on the by-line to a line of players standing about 8 yards out and shooting at the 'keepers from 5-6 yards, to cries of "Great stuff, Andy" etc. At this training in Spain, our keepers are getting tested from all distances.

I'm liking hearing about the intensity of the training. Any player worth their salt should be right onboard with it and relish it and to be fair, the players commenting on it seem to enjoy the intensity.

Loving our players having double sessions in the baking heat.

Gerrard and his staff know what it takes to reach a higher level and we are nothing if our squad runs out of steam after 65 minutes.

This level of fitness could gain us alot of points we missed out on last season.

My only one with this "fitness" push angle is that it takes a lot more than 10 days to substantially raise the level. It's takes months to put that base in.

I know they have only just headed back for preseason so unfair to knock it slightly but I just think comments about increased fitness after 10 days is too premature.

There fitness will have increased a fair amount in ten consistent days of double sessions, also this is about creating the correct base for the rest of the season.

Given that they have been on holiday etc it won't lift them considerably above their "in season" condition from last year. Takes more than 2 weeks to significantly increase their cardio maxes etc.

I agree with you that it's a start towards improving the base but it's something that won't be really improved on without a good few months of continual work.

How do you know the answer to the first point out of interest? There are so many variables which contribute to the statement you've just made. I think most players will have kept themselves in shape over the summer and they only had around three weeks off I think?

I dont understand the bit that says'Great stuff Andy' etc. Did this happen or is it just made up?

No mate! it did happen. I just used "Andy" as an example as it could have been any player mentioned. I shook my head when I watched it; for fuck sake, what's great about battering the ball past a keeper from 5-6 yards with no defenders around you? What really pissed me off was that probably 50% of the shots went flying over the crossbar or wide of the posts. That session was on 26 March2018 with Murty and JJ.

No even surprised sadly. Seems a bit far fetched saying 50% of shots were on target. Unrealistic imo.

I'm not disagreeing that they won't have kept themselves fit, but any athlete goes through peaks and troughs in there fitness regime. You load up the heavy work far out from a goal to put in the core fitness and scale back when you are hitting target (in this case the season). At the end of the season a lot of the guys will be drained from a season and in need of recharge so may not be at optimum leaves combined with the 3 week period. Therefore, to significantly improve past a base that saw them blowing out there arse after 70 mins is going to take some time. Not something that takes 10 days.

If you seriously believe that in 10 days you can take a team that was flagging at 70mins and have them at full tilt for 90 mins then every team under the sun would be doing it. It takes time.

I am glad they are trying to improve their levels past last season but gains initially (for me) will come via better players, better tactics, and better understanding of those tactics and then finally the fitness aspect.

Not saying it won't improve fitness levels but can say that when I used to go through my heavy running phases before competing and clocking up the miles it was done for 2/3 months at a time, 6 days per week alongside sport specific training and weights etc.

I just went and had another look at it, They were supposed to hit it to the left of the keeper. Morelos got 2 correct- 2 over the bar- 2 saved....Windass never hit the target at all from his 6.....Halliday got 3 right...Herrera got 1 from 5 right....I stopped watching after that,
