The first decision of the day was which channel to watch the final on. The BBC went for the much criticised blowhard staters-of-the-obvious team, Rio, Micah, Lineker and, for balance, Juan Mata, but I opted for ITV almost solely for Roy Keane.

It was an occasion that desperately needed a non-English perspective

:belm:

One of my pet hates when people moan about the England “coverage” during other games not involving England too.

You are broadcasting on British TV to a mainly English audience, of course there’s going to be news from the England camp rather than an hour of Tifo football like analysis on why Albania’s left back might cause Croatia’s right winger a problem

It’s not even as if they never spoke about Scotland during the build up to other games

Only points of note imo:

  • Ronaldo is finished, thanks for a great career. Harry will be along soon.
  • Turkey, Georgia, Albania all showing what smaller countries can do
  • Southgate has taken England as far as he can
  • Germany produced a superbly organised tournament
  • Steve Clarke has to be sacked but won’t be.
  • Best team won in a victory for skill over effort.

Turkey was the biggest country in the tournament.

Not in my experience. Local trains around Munich and Cologne were every few minutes and the journey between them (4 and a bit hours) was on time and smooth. Could have done with more catering staff but that’s not a biggie.

Million times better than this country.

Like most Scots, I was hardly cheering on England. Although I honestly didn't care that much if they won or lost.

But aye, things like this are a bit tragic and screams of little man syndrome.

Particularly when we finished last and they got to the final.

Calvin Harris annoyed me somewhat last night as well announcing Spain were 1 up to massive celebration.

Reckon some cunt had a word in his ear mind you as not another word said all night.

Hundreds of young yins with Spanish flags draped over them and some cretin senior steward with a loudspeaker giving it ‘No Spain No party’.

On a more positive note, was heartened to see plenty Union & Scotland flags.

All I’d take issue with there is that, with a population of 86 million, Turkey’s no longer in the ‘smaller country’ category!

More than doubled in the last 50 years!

Was at Perth races yesterday and there was even some daft woman cutting about with a Spain flag. Came home and seen literally hundreds in a picture at Trnsmt.

I get that it is a rivalry but has it always been this bitter?

As explained earlier, in footballing terms, they are underdogs.

China has 1.4 billion but, in footballing terms in the context of a World Cup for example, they are small fry.

Given their history as a footballing nation, arguably, they ought to be doing better by now!

Although they are improving - 40 years ago they were getting beaten 8-0 by England!
