Cumbria_blue 51
Steven Naismith will end eight months on the Ibrox sidelines today when he makes his long-awaited comeback in a reserve outing at Murray Park. The Rangers forward, a £2million purchase from Kilmarnock, suffered cruciate knee-ligament damage in the Scottish Cup semi-final against St Johnstone at Hampden in April. Naismith then had corrective surgery shortly after the UEFA Cup Final in May before embarking on the long road to recovery. Now the 22-year-old is set to face St Mirren reserves at Rangers' training complex in Milngavie later today as Walter Smith welcomes back one of his long-term casualties. 'Steven could have played three or four weeks ago but the specialist involved wanted to give him more time to be ready,' revealed Smith. 'We are now hoping he could be back early in January. That is a pleasing thought beca use he offers us something different.' Ironically, Naismith's recovery may not be helped by a shutdown period for the SPL Reserve League, but Rangers intend to organise a couple of bounce games to ensure the player's continued progress. One target for him could be the Homecoming Scottish Cup fourth round visit to St Johnstone on Tuesday, January 13, with BBC Scotland to screen the Perth game live. Meanwhile, American international Maurice Edu has admitted he has struggled to come to terms with the SPL during his limited exposure to the Scottish game. Rangers spent £2.5m in August to land the defensive midfielder from Toronto. He played 65 minutes in a home win against Kilmarnock in September and the full match in the Ibrox victory against Hamilton in the League Cup in late October. But the 22-year- old last night revealed the SPL is proving to be a much more difficult place to play in than for Toronto in Major League Soccer and the National Collegiate Athletic Association, where he starred for University of Maryland. 'I've found the SPL to be a lot more physical than both,' he said. 'Though I haven't been involved in too many games yet, you can see the level of intensity everyone competes with. 'The number of challenges and tackles are increased and every game is truly a battle. 'Even in training, it is more physical and a battle as everyone is competing for a spot on the pitch.' Queen of the South manager Gordon Chisholm, meanwhile, has signed young Rangers defender Steven Kinniburgh on a month-long deal - and is hoping the Ibrox club will also farm out goalkeeper Lee Robinson. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/...u.html?ITO=1490 Well thank god for that. It would be a hell of a poor look-out if the SPL was a step down from the MLS.
BallochBear 1,613
With Beasley, Burke and Aaron attaining full fitness we're better off in wide areas now and that was a bit of a problem. It's a shame we're getting them all back at once, a couple of them were needed well before now. When you see Adam and Lafferty on the wings you appreciate how important proper wingers are. Funny how it's always feast or famine. Must be feast as The Famine's Over.

Amac9 2,060
Rangers striker Steven Naismith scored for the reserves on Tuesday in his first appearance since suffering a serious injury in the summer. The 22-year-old feared being out for up to a year after being carried off during the Scottish Cup semi-final against St Johnstone in May. Naismith played for 70 minutes and scored in the 3-1 victory over St Mirren at Murray Park. "I'm glad to be playing again rather than being stuck in the gym," he said. Naismith underwent surgery to repair the damaged cruciate ligament in his left knee and initially feared he would be out for 12 months. But his recovery has been quicker than expected and he expressed relief at making another appearance in a Rangers jersey. "I've been a bit surprised. This game only came about last week and the physio said he wanted me to be involved in it," he said. "I'm delighted I managed to get a run-out." http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/t...ers/7773448.stm

Naisy is not a left winger and Kenny Miller is most certainly not a right winger. Great he is back but with Millers form, hard to see where he will play. Please for the love of god though Walter, dont shove him out wide left........

Youllneverwinaway 0
Did he not play the majority of his games for Killie wide left? If not the majority then certainly a fair few. Lafferty played a "fair few" wide left at Burnley but like Naismith he is a striker. Naisy will be wasted wide left though i will admit that he will certainly be no worse than the 20 odd performances we have seen on the left this season so far. BlueSuedeSambas 53,956
While he did play there on ocassions I think that all this talk of Naismith predominantly being a striker a Kilmarnock is actually something of a myth. When he first broke through it tended to be Boyd & Nish upfront with him operating on the left and in the season after that he was often the left, or even right sided player in a front three where Nish was the focal point. Hopefully he still has a bit of dtrength about him coz we dont want him to be pushed off the ball as easily as Burke and Beasley

Hopefully he still has a bit of dtrength about him coz we dont want him to be pushed off the ball as easily as Burke and Beasley He looked a wee bit chunky a few months back so I suspect he spent a good bit of time "bulking" while he couldn't do normally training and since he was given the all clear he has looked to lean out while retaining the strength he built up while injured.
