JEROME ROTHEN, 31, started his football career with SM Caen and Troyes AC having come through France's famous Clairefontaine youth academy.

Born in Chatenay-Malabry his talent on the left flank quickly won him many admirers and in 2001 AS Monaco swooped to secure his services.

Playing alongside former Ibrox stars Dado Prso and Julien Rodriguez, Rothen became a star at the Red and Whites and was a key player as the club reached the final of the Champions League in May 2004.

Monaco, of course, were to lose to a Porto side that featured Ibrox midfielder Pedro Mendes but Rothen's skill from set-pieces and attacking flair made him a stand-out throughout the campaign.

In the following summer the winger fulfilled a childhood dream when he signed for Paris St. Germain and during his five year spell in the capital he made 139 appearances, scoring ten goals.

On the international stage his debut for France arrived on March 29, 2003 and Rothen was subsequently picked for the French national squad for Euro 2004.

In total he has 13 caps for his country and on October 13, 2007 he scored his first and only international goal with a trademark free-kick in a 6-0 away win over the Faroe Islands.

In 2008/09, Rothen made 34 appearances for PSG and played an important role as the club progressed through to the quarter-final stage of the Europa League.

The Parisians hammered German Champions Wolfburg 5-1 on aggregate in the last 32 stage with Rothen scoring in an impressive 3-1 second-leg away victory.

Having now signed a one-year loan deal with Rangers, the experienced 31-year-old can look forward to Champions League football again and coming up against an old Monaco friend in Sevilla defender Sebastien Squillaci.

I'm going to hold my hands up and say that if I was told we were making a deadline day move for a left sided player with a great delivery into the box I would have assumed it was Charlie Mulgrew and in all honesty I would have been delighted.

We have lacked somebody with a good delivery into the box and our position was looking so desperate that I would have been happy at a move for just about anybody who could fill that position.

Instead it turns out that we are bringing in a guy like Rothen.

I really didn't see this coming and I'm really happy at this news :D

RANGERS have completed the deadline-day signing of Jerome Rothen on a one year loan deal from French side Paris Saint-Germain.

Walter Smith has moved to bring in the talented left sided midfielder after his proposed move to Schalke fell through earlier this week.

With experience of the Champions League and thirteen caps for his country, the Frenchman could become a key player for Smith's side as they enter the group stages of the continent's biggest competition.

The former Monaco man has lined up against the Gers already this season when he turned out for Toni Kombouare's PSG side in the pre-season Emirates Tournament in London.

He passed a medical at Murray Park earlier today before putting pen to paper on the year long deal that will see him join Smith's squad's bid to retain the SPL title.

Hmmm, so, does that mean Whittaker kept him quiet all game?

lol, that means, we might just have a RB on our hands (tu)

I honestly can't believe it. What a day.

When i heard the rumour last night i was in shock and thought it was a load of mince. If we can get even 75% of his potential gracing Ibrox then he is gonna be 1 hell of a player for us this season.

He also lost against our Pedro too :P
