stuart54 218
Sports Direct Arena Mk II! Ashley in bid to rename Rangers' iconic Ibrox stadiumBy Charles SalePUBLISHED:22:45, 28 November 2012| UPDATED:22:46, 28 November 2012Comments (0)ShareNewcastle owner Mike Ashley is understood to be in negotiations with Rangers for naming rights to the Glasgow club’s iconic Ibrox Stadium. The proposed deal would lead to one of football’s most famous stadiums, which opened in 1899, being renamed the Sports Direct Arena to promote Ashley’s sports retail empire.Rangers have been exploring image rights deals since the Charles Green-led consortium took over the troubled club last June, shortly before they were demoted to the Third Division. What's in a name: Mike Ashley is in talks over the naming rights of IbroxHowever, any move to rename the stadium is certain to anger many Rangers fans, even given the club’s financial plight.Indeed, many would never acknowledge Ibrox being called anything else.Ashley caused fury on Tyneside a year ago by renaming Newcastle’s own historic St James’ Park as the Sports Direct Arena, to showcase the branding opportunities to potential naming rights partners. But Newcastle reverted back to St James’ Park last month in a bid to appease growing supporter concern about another re-naming —to the Wonga Arena — after a new £32million shirt sponsorship deal was signed with the controversial short-term loan company who charge huge interest. Now, despite that setback, the opportunity to have his company name on an even more world-renowned football venue greatly appeals to Ashley, who is expanding his Sports Direct business in Scotland.Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2240043/Newcastle-owner-Mike-Ashley-plans-rename-Ibrox-CHARLES-SALE.html#ixzz2DYtHlHnbFollow us: @MailOnline on Twitter | DailyMail on Facebook

eosmhdo 1,879
I think Ashley had it all planned at Newcastle.Change name, major fans outcry, great publicity for his company. Then get wonga mob to pay top dollar to change it back to st James park which got them equally big publicity so a major corporate win all round. Was thinking he would try the same with us at some point knowing the media reporting on his connections to the club.No surprise this at all to me but.HE CAN FUCK OFF IMO.It's a corporate game now, we are just paying customers.Very sad if I am right but no great shock if proved correct. Straight-Edge-Loyal 6,700
We had this debate last year and we didn't want it then but if its a huge offer then we should something like 10 million a year I'd be happy enough with though clearly that won't happen. MosesMcNeil 1,664
We'll always call it Ibrox. I was more upset when they stuck sponsors on the shirts. In fact that's so accepted now that people buy the shirt with the scabby sponsors logo even when they do not have to."Money, get awayGet a good job with more pay and you're okayMoney, it's a gasGrab that cash with both hands and make a stashNew car, caviar, four star daydream,Think I'll buy me a football team..." jack1690 793
Not happy with this but 6 months ago I feared there would be no Rangers so, to be honest, I can take any hit now no matter how severe.
RangersMedia 35,962
With the current state of Scottish football any cash injection is welcome and we'd be stupid to refuse.I doubt anyone will ever refer to it as anything other than Ibrox.
