BlueSuedeSambas 53,858
Anybody see the feature on this on Sky Sports Yesterday?Eleven current first team players have been with the club since they were in the under sevens, they have commitment of promoting three players from the youth set up to the first team every season and they haven't signed a replacement for De Jong because the ethos is that the next 'star player' must rise from within the club. They have seven grass pitches to maximise playing time and Wim Jonk justified this by saying that without proper technique nothing else matters. They have 4 coaches at U17,18 & 19 level and they swap coaches every six weeks because 'more eyes see more'.They are also in the process of building a school on site too.Obviously Ajax have pumped millions of pounds into this, it's been established for years if it was easy to achieve the success they have had with it everybody would do it, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't attempt it. We should be striving to emulate the set up that they have, even if it is on a smaller scale and once everything is back on a level footing at the club I really hope it's one of the first areas that we address.People who say it's impossible for us to implement because of how demanding we are as a support have no leg to stand on because Ajax are also a massive club who are expected to win everything domestically too. The Godfather 72,000
Instead of focussing on youth and development we pumped our millions into the wages of SPL players when we were in the 3rd tier of Scottish football. If we didn't do it then I can only assume we never will sadly. LaudrupsPatrickBoots 13,510
We had our chance. We chose to throw huge wages at average players, a terrible management team and upgraded big screens instead.
sassaaaa 11,406
Was only a matter of time before we hear the whole Dutch story and how great they do it .The same Dutch system thats won nothing outside their country for yonks. We had the chance 3 years ago and we blew it big time ........ G.E.C. 18,806
Bit unrelated to Ajax this but is Jimmy Calderwood worth a shout for the manager job?He played and managed in Holland and I'm sure he was a regular visitor to Dutch training sessions. GOAT 30,449
I said it three seasons ago, we had money in the bank so what we should have done is send representives to teams like Ajax, Feyenoord, Porto, Benfica, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Valencia, Anderlecht, Bayern, Dortmund etc and got them to write up reports from their training centres and put into a dossier and took the best bits that we liked and then just set up about rebuilding our training and youth schemes at the club. Improved Murray Park, went into partnership with the local schools etc. Set about a footballing philospophy that everyone at Rangers adheres to from the youngest youth to the oldest pro. Instead we've fucked it up big time. We probably wont ever get that chance again. I hope I'm wrong. It's fucking depressing.
Skyson1872 2,923
Obviously Dutch football in General is better than here, but we should still be looking to replicate Ajax. They currently have 2 wingers that are like 17/18, one is called Ricardo Kishna, forgot the other one but these 2 players will end up going for at least 20m in a few seasons. gersandy 594
Feyernoords model seems to have worked aswell. They were a club in turmoil. Financially ruined. Stuck with youths for a couple of seasons. This summer they had Stefan de Vrij, Bruno Martins Indl, Kongolo, and Janmaat at the world cup. Big Al 55 9,275
I completely agree we should be following such a model. Although we should not forget that it is built into the Scottish psyche to self-destruct between 16-18.

The Monk 3,207
It's similar to Feyenoord too, there were forced down the route of using youngsters because of their financial situation and look at them now, will probably challenge for the title. I don't buy this shite from Ally that they aren't good enough, McKay was good enough to start most games for Morton in the championship so why wasn't he good enough to start for us in league one. Gasparotto won player of the tournament at that Milk cup thing with Canada but will most likely won't get over 5 appearances this year for us. MacLeod should have had the team built round him, Gallagher has done more in the little time he has played than Boyd has shown in pre-season and against Hibs/Hearts. Admittedly it's going to be harder to blood youngsters into the team this year because fundamentally we need to get the job done but McKay, Luca, Sinnamon, Murdoch, Gallagher etc could have gone into this season with like 40 games under their belt each in the leagues that were risk free.We need to start fresh, top to bottom. Elfideldo (sp?) has a much greater knowledge of the youth set up than all of us and it's frightening how he said that great prospects at 13/14/15 are having growth stunted by poor coaches at the 17/18s level who just want to punt it up the park. Just fed up really, Ally has blown our chance to establish a new philosophy.

GOAT 30,449
BTW, we should also have approached the Belgian FA aswell for advice, they invested millions into grass roots football about a decade ago, and look where they are now.

bombaybadboy08 15,660
Most of the time we are only interested in being better than celt*c, that's the main problem when you have Rangers men in charge, their heart takes over and short term is more important than long term. Now all we are interested in is getting back to the top league as fast as possible, just to be better than celt*c again. The board have flung too much money at it but the manager could have invested it more wisely. Can't see a system like this ever being put in place tbh, we will continue to sign players that will leave for nothing a year or two down the line then start again, then moan that we don't have any money. True Azure 1,414
It's astonishing that fans can pinpoint the failings within our youth "system" while the so called experts in our club do absolutely hee haw to implement tried and tested youth formulae of Europes most successful clubs. It makes you wonder why the Board are getting paid so much for getting fuck all done in this respect?

Turnberry18 3,204
Murray Park should be the perfect place to do something radical and it just isn't happening. It needs someone who has full authority, not answerable to the Manager, whoever the Manager is, and that person should be a highly regarded figure with a salary to match. We are wasting what Advocaat had ideas for this place to be.
