West Brom winger James McClean has received significant backlash after refusing to acknowledge the English national anthem before a friendly against United States side Charleston Battery.

The Irish international turned away from the flags and bowed his head for the duration of the anthem and also opted against wearing a remembrance poppy as it would "be a gesture of disrespect for the innocent people who lost their lives in the Troubles", drew a strong reaction on social media for the gesture.

McClean played the entire 90 minute game and was named man of the match by the club's website.

One Baggies fan took the controversy as an opportunity to create a new chant for the Ireland player, and we have a feeling it might catch on:

Telegraph putting a disgraceful spin on it by cherrypicking one twitter account

to be fair to the tele, they do usually rip the back outta him after he called it a bitter and sectarian paper

I dont know how he gets so much media coverage for this/ his poppy stance etc, and yet nothing over his twitter post with him wearing the lilly on his wigan track top. How that didnt make the news I dont know

Sign of the times that he'l get away with that and still swagger about like he's some sort of freedom fighter.

In the 80's opposition right backs (and fans) would be waiting to teach him a lesson.

He's a silly, brainless little boy who is too dull to even realise he's showing himself up for being a hypocritical fool.

Wow...

If something like this happened over here, it would practically be a national scandal. Can't imagine he'll be too popular with other team's supporters going forward!

That's the problem here TG. If you live in Britain and hate Britain then you're a modern day hero. If you live in Britain and love Britain then you're a racist

When did this conversation actually happen? Seen someone mentioning it the other day but I couldn't find anything.

Not sure, was hoping someone here could enlighten me. I seen McClean's tweets about saying Kiernan was a Tim but nothing about Kiernan's reply.

Johnathan Liew from the Telegraph points out as usual it's the big bad Rangers supporters that are to blame, read the quote below.

Are we obliged to lynch him, or can we just put him on a plane home? Instead, McClean’s lack of reverence is singled out, largely by the same people who thought Gazza pretending to play the flute during the Old Firm derby was absolutely hilarious.(wasn't during an old firm game btw )

The quote above just shows how the poison from the media up here has even spread south.
