Phil 1,150
If I should fall to rise no more, Like many comrades have before, Then ask the pipes and drums to play, Over the hills and far away. O'er the hills and far away, Through Flanders, Portugal and Spain, King George commands and we obey, Over the hills and far away. So fall in lads behind the drum, With colours blazing like the sun, Down the road so come what may, Over the hills and far away.

ForeverAndEver 71,565
I had a friend called Trevor King a lot of people new his name And a friend to all was he A volunteer right from the start He fought for Ulster with all his heart Just to keep his province free I wont forget the day that he died I wont forget the look in his eye Or these words that he said to me chorus All gave some, Some gave all Some came through for the red white and blue Some had to fall So if you ever think of me Think of all your liberties, and recall That some gave all Trevor King is no longer hee, but his words ring oh so clear And they travel, across our land For his friends he gave his all, stood his ground and took the fall Just to help his fellow man So love your country and live it proud And dont forget all those men who died My people can you see

LiviGer 648
Just had a service at work and a laying of a wreath. Few stories of The Somme mentioned in the service. Really brings it home what they sacrificed, most of them only as teenagers.

cr3_bear 14,892
We owe so much to that generation and the one immediately after , from the men who put their lives on the line in situations many of us would never even dream off in our darkest nightmare to the woman who worked so hard on the home front to keep the country running and doing their part in whichever way they could all whilst raising children and families . Their bravery and resilience is admirable as is that shown by our modern day armed forces aswell
Corky True Legend 2,682
The only post I am making today as this is not a day for arguing with or winding up fellow Bears.. The War Memorial in Melbourne Australia. Lest we forget.
Gooseman 889
It is my honour and privilege to bow my head in silence as a simple mark of remembrance for the many who gave the ultimate sacrifice. I wear my poppy with pride as do my children; I hope that my young ones never know the brutality of war. Every person in this great nation and commonwealth owes an unpayable debt, one that we will never forget regardless of how many people complain about a simple red flower. I will never condemn someone for not wearing the poppy, as this is their choice. I will however condemn and shame people that attempt to sully or in any way degrade the memory of the fallen, or my efforts to show respect to their sacrifice. We will never forget them. Brian Fantana 28,894
The soldier stood and faced God, Which must always come to pass, He hoped his shoes were shining, Just as brightly as his brass. "Step forward now, you soldier, How shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other cheek? To My Church have you been true?" The soldier squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't, Because those of us who carry guns, Can't always be a saint. I've had to work most Sundays, And at times my talk was tough, And sometimes I've been violent, Because the world is awfully rough. But, I never took a penny That wasn't mine to keep... Though I worked a lot of overtime When the bills got just too steep, And I never passed a cry for help, Though at times I shook with fear, And sometimes, God forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears. I know I don't deserve a place Among the people here, They never wanted me around, Except to calm their fears. If you've a place for me here, Lord, It needn't be so grand, I never expected or had too much, But if you don't, I'll understand." There was a silence all around the throne, Where the saints had often trod, As the soldier waited quietly, For the judgment of his God. "Step forward now, you soldier, You've borne your burdens well, Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets, You've done your time in Hell."

plumbGER 24,518
I observed the silence sitting to myself in my van. I moan about my job sometimes, but what these brave men gave always makes me realise how fortunate i am. It's always a difficult time of year for me and my good lady as my step son lost his dad in the aphgan conflict. Lest we forget.
centenarystand 2,227
During the war years no one had a choice. If people in this country cannot respect this they are mentally unstable.
