I don't like it. Imagine going out due to whether a referee decides a player deserves a yellow card or not. We've all seem it before. One referee's yellow card challenge can be only a foul to another referee. There should be some sort of play off or even a penalty shoot out if that's too difficult to organise with the time constraints.

Does anybody know how teams were separated in past world cups in these circumstances?

What would it have been before , just drawing straws ?

Managed to find the rules for the 2014 World Cup. Aye it is which is arguably worse than the disciplinary pish.

5. The ranking of each team in each group shall be determined as follows:
 a) greatest number of points obtained in all group matches;
 b) goal difference in all group matches;
 c) greatest number of goals scored in all group matches.
If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above three criteria, their
rankings shall be determined as follows:
 d) greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the
teams concerned;
 e) goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams
concerned;
 f) greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams
concerned;
 g) drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee.

Yeah both of them are fucking pretty brutal ways too go out , not sure I can think of a better way right enough unless a pen shootout is possible

Only way its possble for a shootout is if the 2 teams in question are playing one another in the final group game.

Bullshit way to go out but I would actually rather just flip a coin or something like others have said 1 referee will see the game differently to others and could also be card happy meaning they get knocked out and the referees the centre of attention again.
