You know the old adage “Build a team around a player” we’ve taken that to a new level. If you are going to do that and you have no plan B then you have to sign someone in the same mould as that player. We’ve signed itten, roofe and Sakala and try to play the same way regardless.

Sakala is surprisingly good in the air but he’s not good at holding up the ball, that’s why he doesn’t play central in our system.
The problem I have with Gio and I think Gerrard was the same, is when personnel don’t fit the system they just get played there to keep the system rather than playing to individuals’ strengths and adjusting how we play. It’s why we see hagi and Aribo on the right wing rather than going through the middle, or Roofe being played as a lone striker looking for him to win aerial battles and hold the ball up.
I think Gio has to change the formation. We did well with a back 3 and front 2 against dortmund at ibrox in the second half, so I think he has to go with that on Thursday. If we see kent play through the middle with roofe/itten with Ramsey in behind we might just get something from it. We ideally need to stop crossing the balls into the box unless we are going to start drilling the balls across the face of the goal. We just don’t really have a physical presence in the box without Alfie (unless it’s at set pieces).
Something has to change on Thursday and if I see the same formation with the same sort of lineup as Sunday I’ll be convinced Gio is not the manager to take us forward.

He suits a front 2, can’t play as a lone striker, as with all striker confidence is a huge factor in how well they play.
He scored 36 in 63 for st gallen and 18 in 50 for Basel, but for us he has 7 in 47 (but most are sub appearances and always as a lone striker or sometimes wide right if I remember correctly).
Should never have been signed on the basis that he didn’t suit our system and our manager when he signed never diverted from the system

It’s the hope that kills you……certainly did after we scored the opener on Sunday “now we’ll show them, let’s get a second and third goal and get back level on points”

See against dortmund Kent and Alfie up front worked well, now roofe can’t ragdoll defenders or hold the ball up and itten should be able to but is shit, so not sure kent with anyone other than Alfie will work.

Third top Europa league goal scorer of all time might go some way to still commanding a fee, let’s be honest that’s where potential suitors will be watching him and that’s where he has played his best.

Yeah I have very high hopes for him, it’s just our right side is a real pain in the ass. It was a priority position to get someone signed in January and we lost out to Brugge for Skov Olsen only to sign Diallo who is not built for this league and has been an utterly pointless waste of time and money, he may have ability but he’s not cut out for this league.
This is where I’d look to change formation to a 4-3-1-2 to drop the wide players and play two up top with one in behind (lowry) then jack and lundstram. As Bassey and Tav bomb forward jack and lundstram drift wider to cover the wings. You then have two strikers in the box and Lowry lurking on the edge of the box because the boy can hit a shot.
Wishful thinking as I can’t see the manager changing anything meaning we try to shoehorn players into a right wing role: Aribo, Hagi, Arfield, Sakala….we’ve been at this all season.

I’d rather have a team of players that perform 7/10 every game than players capable of the incredible as you say 1 in every 10 games.
Over time you get the few players that give you those moments but like today when you have too many performing so badly it doesn’t matter how well one or two players are playing you won’t get results.

If you are talking about the league only then that’s not right, yes it’s 50% since January but overall it’s 68%, he won the first 7 league games before the break (13 wins from 19 = 68%) EDIT: I see your later comment about Pedro, but Gio won 7 out of 7 (best start for a Rangers manager in the league if i remember correctly).
the collapse after the break (which we’ve seen before) is shocking and everyone has a stake in the blame but we’ve seen this from this squad of players 3 times now.
I don’t think Gio is the long term answer but I can’t see the board a king him and his staff, Wilson would have to go too as it’s his appointment and his failure and a large number of players need replaced as their contracts are up. Just can’t see the board doing all (or probably any) of that
