‘I think everyone accepts we need more numbers in our squad,’ said McCoist. ‘We need more strength in depth.

‘I would describe Danns as a box-to-box midfielder with good physical attributes and he should be suited to Scotland.’

Celtic are weighing up whether to join Rangers in an Old Firm fight for Crystal Palace midfielder Neil Danns.

Ibrox boss Ally McCoist has pinpointed the 28-year-old free agent as a one of his first signings of the summer — alongside Israeli striker Tomer Hemed — and hopes to open contract talks with his representatives this week.

Sportsmail understands, however, that Danns also features on a list of targets drawn up by Celtic’s scouting staff.

And, while the Parkhead club have yet to decide whether to launch a move for the Liverpool-born player, it raises the possibility of yet another tug-of-war between the Glasgow giants.

In recent seasons, Kris Commons, Kyle Lafferty, Glenn Loovens, Scott Brown and Vladimir Weiss have all been coveted by both Old Firm clubs before opting for either Ibrox or Parkhead.

Danns has rejected a new contract at Selhurst Park and will return from holiday to ponder his options.

A number of Championship clubs are also keen on the former Birmingham player — who scored eight goals last season — although it’s understood that no formal offers have yet been put forward.

Striker Hemed is another free agent after his contract with Maccabi Haifa expired and McCoist is keen to land the 24-year-old, who scored 15 goals for the Israeli champions last season.

Contract talks are now set to take place in the hope of fending off rival interest from Italy and Belgium in the player, who recently earned his first full international cap. A work permit is not an issue as Hemed carries a Polish passport.

Sources in Israel suggest that he is seeking a deal in the region of £7,000 per week.

McCoist was given a glowing recommendation to pursue the deal from former Aston Villa boss John Gregory, who coached Hemed during his breakthrough loan spell at Maccabi Avi Nazareth.

As he steps up his preparations for the new season, McCoist is due to meet with Rangers owner Craig Whyte — when he hopes for positive updates on the progress of contract talks with Allan McGregor, Steven Davis and Steven Whittaker.

The latter’s agent has warned the Ibrox club they cannot expect him to extend his deal on the cheap after they rejected two transfer offers from Turkish club Bursaspor.

The Ibrox boss will also press ahead with plans for central defensive reinforcement. Arsenal’s Kyle Bartley and Liverpool’s Danny Wilson remain options to return to the club on loan, while McCoist will also speak to Aston Villa about Carlos Cuellar’s position.

That could well mean trying to negotiate a deal with former Rangers boss Alex McLeish, who is favourite to take over the vacant post at Villa Park after resigning from rivals Birmingham City.

Once again, the runners-up show all the free-thought of a piece of tracing paper.

Anyway, not fussed if we miss out on him, but they really have no shame that lot.

Depends on who the Italians interested are, we stand a good shot of getting Hemed.
