THE stopper insists: "There is no point beating about the bush - it was 6-1. We were out-played and under-performed over the two legs."

Darren McGregor does his bit to try to sell season tickets today

DARREN McGREGOR insists Rangers fans are right to label the remaining members of last season's Ibrox squad "failures".

Despite having the second biggest budget in Scotland, the Light Blues saw their promotion bid collapse.

First they could only limp home to a third-place Championship finish before beinghumiliated by Motherwell in the play-off final.

That 6-1 mauling cost Stuart McCall his chance to keep the manager's job on a permanent basis.

Englishman Mark Warburton has now been charged with leading Gers back to the Ladbrokes Premiership.

His first act will be to replace the 11 players who were allowed to leave following that Well disaster.

But McGregor believes the men who remain are determined to make amends by winning promotion at the second attempt.

And the defender said: "There is no point beating about the bush - it was 6-1. We were out-played and under-performed over the two legs.

"It's difficult as a football player to admit that. You never like to admit that you did fail.

"But I'm sure if you ask 99.9 per cent of the fans, they will say that the boys who were here were failures because we never got up.

"So that's a tag that we rightly got.

"Now it's about this season and trying to prove we are not failures."

He added: "Obviously it was a disappointment last season so for us it is just about righting the wrongs.

"We know we under-performed massively last season. All the boys who have gone and those who are still here are still bitterly sore about that.

"But we now need to wipe the slate clean. It's a new season, a fresh start under a new manager with new ideas.

"We just need to galvanise the troops and hopefully the guys who are coming in are ready. They look like quality signings already though."

Warburton met his new side for the first time on Saturday as Gers reported to Murray Park for pre-season training.

The former Brentford boss obviously made a good first impression on McGregor, with the 29-year-old admitting he was "impressed" by his new boss' opening address.

But the former St Mirren man knows it's now up to him to prove his worth after Warburton made former Hearts skipper Danny Wilson and Wigan centre-half Rob Kiernan his first Ibrox captures.

"I was reading the papers hoping it was going to be midfielders and forwards but all our signings have so far been defenders," McGregor said.

"But to be honest at a big club like Rangers you can't expect players not to come in. If that stops then there is problems.

"I played against Danny when he was at Hearts and he's very good technically as well as a good defender.

"The big boy Kiernan looks very good in training too.

"I was asked last season if I was worried about competition but I played 50 games, so I just work hard and hope the attitude I show in training gives me a shot at playing.

"But I know it will be difficult because the boys look quality."

He's right in what he says in that interview, but for me they all start again this season with a clean slate, but it's got to be a massive improvement from everyone that was here last season, and if they can adapt to Mr Warburton's ideology then fair enough.

Nice bit of class from him there, sounds like he knows his chances of a starting slot are fucked but is big enough to praise the new guy's quality.

I'm sure he will come in handy when suspensions/injuries kick in.

Spot on mate, I'm pretty sure he can still play a big part this coming season, albeit not a first choice starter.

I applaud the big guy for his honest assessment, Interesting when you consider the genuine effort that Mcgregor put in for us and compare the comments from fat arse boyd who hardly kicked a ball and takes no responsibility for what was abject failure.

I hope Darren gets a fair crack of the whip with the new management team, his effort and hard work is appreciated by this Bear, Who knows what new skills he may show with our new playing style!?....

Good to hear a player that understands how the fans are feeling. I liked him when he first arrived and think we might see a big improvement this season as he never got a chance to settle in one postion or have the same CB playing alongside him. Always think the 2 CB's should be a hard man with a ball player and Darren is certainly not scared of a tackle.

I like him, still think he has a good part to play in the promotion fight.

Not the most skillful player, but he always seems to try his hardest in games, one of the few in the team that actually looked like they gave a fuck.

A really good honest guy. He just doesn't have the ability for me and is a bit of a liability. Maybe MW can bring it out and I will be chuffed for him.

I like him at right back, where I thought he was in the game more and contributed a lot. I get the feeling at times he is not comfortable in CD. Doesn't look so confident. We will see what preseason under MW does for him.

Sounds a little fearful to me, but at least he knows the score as far as last season went. He'll get games, hope he does continue to do his best when he does play.

If he plays and doesn't do his best,Dutchy, you can bet your arse there is something wrong, such as an injury. For a guy to suffer 2 cruciate ligament injuries exactly 12 months apart that could have finished his career and limited him to only playing a handful of games over a 2 season period to then come back and put in great performances for St.Mirren is a testament to the courage of the man.

He gets a fair bit of stick at times for being not a very good player, but considering he got player of the year for us in his first season it doesn't say much for the "superstars" that were around him.

He possibly might not be a regular under Warburton but I'm sure he will give 100% when called upon.

You can't fault the lad for his honesty. :pipe:

Yea he could even get better under the new gaffer, he's showing the right attitude anyway.

Never mind the new gaffer, which defender could not get better if they listened to Davie Weir? This is Darren's chance to learn from a legend and I am sure Mark will give him his chance if he proves himself in training.

Aye, I wasn't thinking there.

Davie can give him tips and the gaffer can get into his head and make him believe he's better than he is, fucking love psychology :)

Feels weird having a real coach in charge.
