Scottish football descended into farce last night as the draw for the SFA's showpiece competition, the Scottish Cup,  had to be abandoned shortly after the first tie was drawn. Dundee Utd had no sooner been drawn at home against Celtic than the presiding officer drew a swift halt to proceedings.

The official  explanation given was that one of the capsules had burst open, but an SFA insider explained there was a more sinister reason behind the chaotic scenes. 'Peter Lawwell had given clear instructions that Celtic were to be drawn at home against lower league opposition', explained the administrator on condition of anonymity. 'On seeing the draw he burst out of his office and into Stewart Regans and started screaming at the top of his voice'.

'Thankfully Stewart's quick thinking saved the day..  he earned every penny of his huge salary today'.

The rearranged draw saw normal service resumed with Celtic being gifted a comfortable home draw against Lower league side Morton.

'It was a particularly embarrassing draw for Peter as he had already explained to the referees committee, earlier today, that he was looking forward to a showpiece final against Dundee Utd,  to reward them for gifting all of their young talent to Celtic over the past few years'.

Dundee Utd are now considered to be a feeder club for Celtic and languish at the bottom of the SPL,  looking destined for lower league status in years to come.

Nicolla  Sturgeon's office appeared unmoved by the incident despite it being played out on national television,  rendering the nation a laughing stock once again. 'How Peter runs the SFA is entirely up to him,' a spokesman said last night.

Stewart Regan was apparently still sobbing as he left his Hampden office last night,  and made no comment to waiting reporters before being hugged by his mother in a waiting car.  An SFA spokesman however later laughed off reports that he might resign. 'Of course not,  incidents like this happen every day'.

If anyone has any interest left in this farcical Cup, bookmakers Ladbrokes last night reduced the odds on Celtic winning the Cup to an unprecedented 100/1 on.
