Barton suspension

He bet on himself at first goalscorer in one of those bets.  Betting on yourself to be the first goal scorer might appear to be trivial but it could result in a player taking ridiculous shots at goal instead of passing to a team-mate who is in a better position or even 'accidently' getting his body in the way of a teammates goal bound shot.

It's a fair point, I think the accidentally getting in the way of a goal is unlikely and immediate questions would be asked if it happened. Hitting daft shots though seems more likely albeit you'll get greedy bastard players that would do that anyway

The picture proves nothing. He couldn't influence any of the games. He's said as much in his statement and also said the fa accepted that.

How could he not influence the games where he was part of the starting 11....

2 matches on there, Man City vs Fulham & Stevenage vs Newcastle he was in the 11 and placed bets on his team's winning

Aye you could argue that might make him try harder to win lol but the first goalscorer bet, could easily mean he's taking shots he wouldn't normally take

Thought the punishment was harsh at first but since it's involving matches he actually played it I've got zero sympathy

Then there's trying to get the last touch on a goalbound strike, perhaps when you're in an offside position.  Insisting on taking direct free kicks and penalties, getting booked for diving trying to win a penalty then being on eggshells for the rest of the match, getting caught out of position because you're so far upfield chasing a goal...  There's all sorts of ways that bet could affect a match.

Just noticed one of the bets he published was lay Samaras/1st goalscorer when they were both at Man City together.   Only a fiver but you could see how the FA could see the potential for a player to rig the result by not passing to Samaras until a goal went in.  Silly boy.

Even if it's a game he's not playing in, he's going to have inside info on who might be getting a surprise start, who's injured etc. Don't see any excuse for betting on your own club, regardless of the bet or whether you're actually playing.

Amazed that people on here have any sympathy for the man. He made a fool of the club and the supporters.  Remember the Barton scarves and the way he was held up to be some kind of messiah, sickening.

In what way did he personally make a fool of the club?

Indeed.   Also as something of a journeyman he's going to have a lot of contacts in the game who might reveal what's been going on at their clubs over a pint; their training drills that week, new formations being practised ahead of a big match, the manager's plan to park the bus and take it to penalties in the cup final... He's really made a rod for his own back but as usual it's everyone's fault but Joey Barton's.

They didn't see the potential for him to fix results though. They said there was no suspicion of it apparently.

Maybe not results as such but you can see how players betting on a game could influence how it's played out, and it wouldn't be sporting.

Doing anything at all in the that could help his bets would still be seen as match fixing and he was cleared of that. It doesn't have to be the results, look at the Sutton goalkeeper and the pie bet.
